It’s widely agreed that Game of Thrones was a massive and incredibly popular TV show. HBO’s version of George R.R. Martin’s books became a global sensation and raised the bar for fantasy TV, a standard few shows have matched. Now, almost seven years after the series finale, it will soon be even easier to stream the entire show with its upcoming release on Prime Video.
If you loved the complex politics and brutal realism of Game of Thrones, you absolutely need to check out The Winter King. It’s a fantastic historical drama – though currently only on MGM+, it’s hitting Prime Video on March 25th with all ten episodes. It’s not your typical King Arthur story; this show is a really gritty and grounded take on the legend, following Arthur’s journey from a banished outsider to a powerful leader trying to bring a broken Britain together in the 5th century. Expect plenty of political maneuvering, backstabbing, and battles against the Saxons. It’s based on Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles, and Iain De Caestecker is brilliant as Arthur.
The Winter King Deserved More Seasons
Fans who quickly watched all ten episodes of The Winter King are in for disappointment: the show won’t be returning for a second season. Canceled after just one season on MGM+ in 2023, it’s unfortunate because the series had the potential to be a major fantasy success. The Winter King offered a grittier, more realistic take on the Arthurian legend, moving away from traditional magic and focusing on the harsh realities of 5th-century Britain. It delivered intense drama with its brutal fight scenes, power plays, political intrigue, and romantic entanglements. William Mata of the London Evening Standard even called it the closest thing to a Game of Thrones adaptation of Camelot, and Barbara Ellen of The Guardian believed the series aimed to be among the biggest fantasy blockbusters, like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
While not as critically acclaimed as Game of Thrones, The Winter King still received a solid 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers particularly enjoyed the show’s compelling characters, talented actors, and realistic world, brought to life with beautiful costumes and scenery. Because it’s based on a finished book trilogy, The Winter King offered a complete story, a contrast to Game of Thrones, which eventually moved beyond the original books.
What’s New on Prime Video?
Although fans are eagerly awaiting The Winter King on Prime Video, Amazon has added a bunch of new movies and shows in March to keep them entertained. Recent additions include titles like Hannibal, Superbad, Twelve Monkeys, Valkyrie, and Iron Mask. Plus, Amazon’s original series Young Sherlock premiered this month.
