A Peaky Blinders Star’s Slept-On Sci-Fi Thriller is Streaming Free (And Now’s a Great Time to Watch)

I’ve always been captivated by Cillian Murphy, especially after seeing him in things like Oppenheimer and Peaky Blinders. But it’s easy to forget he has a real history with science fiction! He was fantastic in Inception and Sunshine, and I’ll never forget the intensity he brought to 28 Days Later – seriously, even zombie movies count as sci-fi, right? Anyway, I just discovered a lesser-known sci-fi film he did, and I was so excited to find out it’s currently available to stream for free on Tubi!

Released in 2011, In Time is a science fiction thriller set in a future where time is money – and when you run out of time, you die. The movie features Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried as a couple fighting against a broken system, with Murphy playing a law enforcement officer trying to maintain it. Though critics didn’t love it, the film – which also stars Olivia Wilde, Matt Bomer, Johnny Galecki, and Alex Pettyfer – did okay in theaters. Despite its imperfections, In Time offers a unique perspective on a revolution story and is worth a watch.

In Time Has a Great Premise (Though the Execution Could Be Better)

The sci-fi film In Time starts with a compelling idea. It’s set in a future where people stop aging at 25, but they’re only given one year to live, displayed as a countdown on their arm. When the clock reaches zero, they die. In this world, time is money – people earn and spend their remaining lifespan like currency. This creates a huge divide: in the poor district of Dayton, most people have less than a day to live, while the wealthy in New Greenwich have centuries, effectively making them immortal.

After Will Timberlake saves a very old man – 116 years old, to be exact – from thieves who steal time, the man gives Will his remaining time and explains how the wealthy manipulate the system to keep people in poverty. This leads Timekeeper Raymond Leon to believe Will stole the time. The movie then follows Will as he tries to escape Raymond while also seeking to dismantle the unfair system that caused his mother to run out of time and tragically die.

The concept behind In Time – that time itself is money and used to keep the wealthy in power – is thought-provoking and ripe for social commentary. However, the film gets bogged down as an inconsistent action movie, unsure if it’s a heist film or something else. Despite these flaws, In Time remains enjoyable. It features a Bonnie and Clyde dynamic when Will teams up with Sylvia, a wealthy banking heiress, to rob time banks and challenge the system. Visually, the movie is striking, especially the scenes depicting New Greenwich, a futuristic and stylish high society.

What Else is On Tubi This March?

March is a fantastic month for science fiction fans looking for free streaming options! Tubi added a bunch of titles this month, including In Time, Ad Astra, Battle: Los Angeles, Bicentennial Man, Ex Machina, and others. However, don’t wait too long to watch – some of these movies are already scheduled to leave the platform soon, so you’ll need to act quickly to enjoy them!
