The 1980s were a golden age for science fiction, launching hugely popular franchises like Back to the Future and Aliens. With Hollywood now revisiting many classic properties, a new sequel to a beloved ‘80s sci-fi series has just arrived on Hulu, and fans will be excited to check it out.
Hulu now has most of the Ghostbusters movies available for streaming, including the recent Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The 2021 film, directed by Jason Reitman, became available on February 16th, shortly after the original two Ghostbusters movies joined the platform. Afterlife is the fourth film in the series and brings back original cast members like Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Sigourney Weaver. The story picks up 30 years after Ghostbusters II and follows a single mother and her children as they uncover a connection to the original ghostbusting team in a new town.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife Revitalized the Iconic ‘80s Franchise
Among legacy sequels, Ghostbusters: Afterlife really stands out. The film successfully introduced a new generation to the Ghostbusters world by moving the story from New York City to Oklahoma and featuring a new, engaging cast of characters. At the same time, it delighted longtime fans with plenty of references to the original movies – including familiar faces, the Ecto-1, and classic equipment like the proton packs. Afterlife skillfully connected the original 1980s films with a modern story, and the passing of the torch from Egon to his granddaughter, Phoebe, felt natural. The film’s focus on a kid-centric adventure, balancing excitement with heartfelt moments, made for a truly satisfying experience.
The recent Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a successful continuation of the original series, earning $204 million in theaters and receiving generally positive reviews (63% on Rotten Tomatoes) and high audience scores (94%). This success led to a new sequel, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which you can stream on Hulu. Another Frozen Empire sequel is planned, though details are currently limited. Plus, with renewed interest in Ghostbusters, Netflix is developing an animated movie based on the franchise.
What’s New on Hulu?
Hulu has added a bunch of new movies this February, including popular titles like Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Django Unchained, The Help, John Tucker Must Die, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Sister Act, 12 Years a Slave, and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. More films, such as The Astronaut and Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, will be available to stream later this month.
