In the current continuation titled “Hush 2,” penned by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee’s original team, Batman finds himself entangled. Unfortunately, unlike the initial “Hush” series, the sequel hasn’t captured readers’ interest as expected. However, the artwork by Jim Lee remains breathtaking, offering visually thrilling moments as Batman confronts Hush’s fresh scheme. Despite assistance from members of the Bat-Family who weren’t part of the original conflict — such as Jason Todd, Damian Wayne, and Batgirl — Hush continues to manipulate Batman. The latest issue #160 concluded with a telling instance of this, where Batman takes on more than he can handle against two new minions of Hush. Remarkably, help arrives — not from the usual suspects, but an unexpected ally: Bane.
In issue #161 of Batman, the action kicks off immediately as Batman finds himself in a tense standoff with Hush, who has Damian at knifepoint. Damian Wayne, Batman’s son, has always been an unpredictable factor, and his arrival accompanied by Bane might just be the wildest twist yet. Although their rivalry is relatively new compared to others, it has certainly intensified significantly. It could even be argued that Bane is Batman’s most formidable adversary, and considering their past encounters, it’s easy to understand why Batman might be hesitant about accepting Bane’s help in any situation.
Bane Owns Some Very Decisive Wins Over Batman
In the mid ’90s, I found myself captivated by none other than the formidable antagonist, Bane, who made his debut in the iconic “Knightfall” episode of Batman. Originally hailing from the island of Santa Prisca, where he served time for the transgressions of his kin, Bane rose to become the dominant force on the island. His sights soon shifted towards Gotham’s Dark Knight, Batman.
At first glance, Bane may have appeared to be merely a towering brute, but beneath that exterior lay a complex individual. In many respects, Bane mirrored Batman – a physical powerhouse whose deadliest weapons weren’t his Venom-infused muscles or impeccable combat skills, but his intellect.
Bane strategized to bring down the Caped Crusader by shattering the walls of Arkham Asylum, leaving Batman with the Herculean task of apprehending the chaos that ensued. When Batman was at his most vulnerable, Bane struck, inflicting a brutal injury that pushed the Dark Knight to the brink.
Stepping into the cowl was Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael, who took over as Batman while Bruce Wayne recovered from his injuries. With time and training, Bruce managed to regain the mantle of the Bat, reclaiming it as Az-Bats.
Over time, Bane reappeared in Batman’s life on multiple occasions, at one point joining forces with Ra’s al Ghul. However, these encounters usually ended with Batman emerging victorious. A theory suggested that they might be related, but it never materialized. Later, Bane decided to take revenge on Batman and devised an intricate scheme involving most of Gotham’s villains, the Psycho-Pirate, Dr. Hugo Strange, and a new form of Venom. This time, Bane managed to shatter Batman’s spirit, ruining his relationship with Catwoman and eventually forcing him out of the city. In retaliation, Batman and Catwoman launched a counterattack, but Bane took something extremely valuable from Batman – Alfred. He threatened the Bat-Family that if anyone attempted to enter Gotham, he would kill Alfred, and Damian, underestimating the risk, made an attempt. He was caught by Flashpoint Batman (who had been assisting Bane) and Gotham Girl, and true to his word, Bane carried out his threat. Despite eventually being defeated by Batman, Bane demonstrated himself as one of Gotham City’s most formidable villains. He not only physically but also spiritually broke Batman, leaving him incapacitated for a while, depriving him of his city, and ultimately taking away the person who was like a father to him.
Batman Was Shocked to See Bane with Damian
Bane’s strategy primarily revolves around psychological warfare. He excels at controlling his adversaries and turning their strengths against them, similar to Batman. The mere presence of Bane next to Damian Wayne, the one responsible for Alfred’s death, was enough to make Batman hesitate due to the formidable opponent he faced. Similarly, Hush, like Bane, thrives on manipulation, and his appearance could simply be part of a larger plan. Although Damian is cautious, he can still be swayed. Batman was already in trouble due to Hush’s metahuman minions, so Bane appearing might have been Hush’s final blow.
Following the fight, Damian confides in his father that he freed Bane from Blackgate Penitentiary due to a debt owed. Naturally, Batman remains cautious around Bane and quickly knocks him unconscious with a single blow. The nature of Bane’s debt to Damian is unclear, and it’s yet to be determined if Bane is truly on Batman’s side or if this situation is another trick by Hush.
