A Shonen Jump Classic Is Returning for New Revival in 2026 After 40 Years: Watch the Trailer

A popular anime series from Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine is getting a brand new revival next year, marking a significant return after almost 40 years. This comes during a period of change for Shonen Jump, as the magazine seeks out its next big hits, while also bringing back beloved classics. Another fan favorite will be joining the lineup next year.

The classic manga and anime series Fist of the North Star is getting a fresh start with a brand new anime to celebrate its 40th anniversary. This revival will look different from previous iterations, utilizing fully CG animation and a new creative team. You can get a first look at the new anime below before it premieres next year.

What to Know for New Fist of the North Star Anime

Fans can look forward to a new adaptation of Fist of the North Star arriving sometime next year, though a specific release date hasn’t been announced yet. Hiroshi Maeda will direct the series for TMS Entertainment, with Kazuhiko Inukai writing the scripts, Naoki Hisatsune designing the characters, Koji leading animation direction, and Yuki Hayashi composing the music. The creative team promises this version will be a more faithful adaptation of the original manga.

I’m excited to see the voice cast for this new adaptation of Fist of the North Star really coming together. We already knew Shunsuke Takeuchi would be Kenshiro, with Daiki Yamashita as Bat, M.A.O. as Rin, Wataru Takagi as Jagi, Tsuguo Mogami as Toki, and Taiten Kusunoki as Raoh. But this latest trailer revealed even more talent joining the project – Koji Yusa will be playing Shin and Saori Hayama is taking on the role of Yuria. From what I’ve seen in the trailer, this version seems to be taking a pretty different approach to the story, and it will be interesting to see how fans react to these changes.

What Is Fist of the North Star?

Originally appearing in Shonen Jump in 1983, Fist of the North Star ran for five years and became a major hit. An anime series followed in 1984, continuing for another four years and creating many iconic moments. While newer anime fans may not know it, this series has greatly influenced numerous action titles published in Shonen Jump since.

Inspired by films like Mad Max and other stories set in ruined worlds, Fist of the North Star tells the story of Kenshiro, a martial artist who uses a unique fighting style to battle enemies in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. The fights are known for being violent and graphic. With renewed interest, the series has a great opportunity to find new fans.
