A Shonen Sequel Series Hits Major Milestone Following Revival

Shonen Jump is well-known for launching manga into popular anime adaptations. While not every manga published by Shueisha becomes an anime, appearing in Shonen Jump significantly increases its chances. Often, successful Shonen Jump manga get renewed interest with sequels, and that’s happening now with one of the publication’s biggest titles. Fans are eagerly anticipating the anime adaptation of this exciting sequel.

Originally published in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2001, Zatch Bell! ran for 33 volumes before concluding in 2007. Its success led to an anime series by Toei Animation, which included 150 episodes and two movies. Recently, the series returned with a sequel created by Makoto Raiku, continuing the story years later. As of now, Zatch Bell! 2 has already sold 1.3 million copies, despite only having six volumes available.

Will Zatch Bell! Return to The Screen?

The sequel to Zatch Bell, which began in 2022, is creatively building upon the world of the Mamodo. While Zatch and his partner Kiyo Takamine are back as the main characters, they’ve both grown up – Kiyo is now 27 and Zatch is 19. Despite these changes, the core conflict – the battle for the Mamodo World – remains the same. The story centers around Beliel, the primary villain, and his attempt to take over the supernatural world using his powerful “Card Army.”

It’s a little unexpected that an anime sequel to Zatch Bell hasn’t been announced yet, given how popular the series was around the world. Like many other anime that became hits in the West, Zatch Bell first aired on Cartoon Network’s Toonami in 2005. Though it continued on the network for a couple of years, not all of the episodes were shown. Toonami originally broadcast seventy-seven episodes out of the total one-hundred and fifty. Unfortunately, it’s still hard to watch the complete original anime, as Zatch Bell isn’t available on major streaming platforms like Crunchyroll or Hulu. Hopefully, if the sequel gets made into an anime, the original series will become available on streaming services too.
