A Stephen King Sci-Fi Classic Is Now Streaming on Netflix (And There’s a Remake on the Way)

Hollywood continues to be fascinated by the stories of Stephen King. Since his first novel, *Carrie*, was published in 1974, many of his books have been adapted into popular films across various genres, including *The Shawshank Redemption*, *Pet Sematary*, and *Stand by Me*. Just last year, *The Monkey* and *The Long Walk* were both made into movies. This fall, another of King’s stories will be adapted for the second time, but the original film version is currently available to stream on Netflix.

Paul Michael Glaser’s 1987 film, *The Running Man*, based on Stephen King’s 1982 novel, became available on Netflix on September 1st. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the movie depicts a dark future where convicts must compete in a deadly game show to survive. It arrived on the streaming service just as a new adaptation of *The Running Man*, directed by Edgar Wright and starring Glenn Powell, is set to be released in theaters on November 14, 2025.

Why You Should Watch The Running Man

I have to admit, *The Running Man* isn’t Stephen King’s personal favorite of all the movies made from his books, and it didn’t exactly break box office records when it came out. But for me, it *is* the ultimate ’80s action flick, and it’s really become a cult classic over the years. What I love about it is how it manages to be a total adrenaline rush *and* a surprisingly smart commentary on things like how the media works, the rise of reality TV, corporate power, and even propaganda. It’s a wild, over-the-top dystopian thriller, sure, but it’s filled with memorable lines and a cleverness that still feels relevant today.

Released in 1987, *The Running Man* stars Arnold Schwarzenegger at the height of his action career, playing Ben Richards – a man wrongly accused of murder who must fight for his life in a brutal televised game show. The film perfectly showcases Schwarzenegger’s strengths as an action star, with his physical presence central to the thrilling battles against professional killers. Richard Dawson is also fantastic as Damon Killian, the cold and corrupt host who serves as a formidable opponent. With its exaggerated violence, believable setting, and iconic lines and characters, *The Running Man* remains a highly entertaining film, especially now with a remake in development for Netflix subscribers.

New Movies Streaming on Netflix

Netflix has added a bunch of popular movies to its lineup this September! At the beginning of the month, they included titles like *The Running Man*, and now you can stream even more. If you’re into action and sci-fi, check out *Edge of Tomorrow*, *Escape Room*, *Hot Shots!*, and *Limitless*. There’s also plenty of comedy with movies like *Billy Madison* and *Bridesmaids*, family favorites like *The Land Before Time* and several *Shrek* films, plus classics such as *E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial*, *Stand by Me*, and *Inglourious Basterds*.

In September 2025, Netflix added several original films to its streaming library, including *Inspector Zende*, *The Wrong Paris*, and *Same Day with Someone*.
