Science fiction is incredibly popular on streaming services, and that includes stories about climate change and disaster. A thrilling 2017 sci-fi film focusing on these themes recently became available on Paramount+ starting November 1st, offering viewers another chance to enjoy its depiction of a world facing catastrophe.
Gerard Butler is known for his work in disaster movies like Greenland (with a sequel coming in January), but this month, you can stream Geostorm on Paramount+. Directed and co-written by Dean Devlin, the film features Butler as Jake Lawson, a satellite designer who must prevent a global catastrophe when a network of climate-controlling satellites begins to fail. The malfunctioning satellites create dangerous weather events around the world, potentially triggering a devastating āGeostorm.ā The cast also includes Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris, and Andy Garcia.
Geostorm Didnāt Wow Critics, But Has Been a Solid Streaming Winner
I’m a big fan of Geostorm, and while it didn’t wow critics when it came out, it’s proven to be surprisingly popular over time. It made over $221 million worldwide, which is good considering it cost around $120 million to make, but the critics really didn’t like it. Thankfully, audiences have always enjoyed it more, and that’s definitely carried over to streaming! It’s been a hit on both HBO Max and Netflix, even hitting the top 10 on both! Just last month, it was actually the second most popular movie on HBO Max for a while. It really shows that sometimes, a movie just finds its audience after its theatrical release, and streaming is where it really shines.
Gerard Butler has increasingly become known for starring in disaster movies, especially after appearing in Geostorm. Three years later, he starred in Greenland, which critics liked much more than Geostorm, praising its realism and Butlerās performance. The filmās success led to the announcement of a sequel, Greenland: Migration.
Although a second Geostorm movie is unlikely, Gerard Butlerās growing popularity in sci-fi thrillers has boosted the filmās viewership on streaming platforms. Now that itās available on Paramount+, it will be interesting to see if it maintains the same level of success it found on other streaming services.
Geostorm is now streaming on Paramount+.
