Superman is DC’s most renowned hero, as demonstrated by the success of James Gunn’s 2025 movie, which led to a sequel being greenlit and a release date announced. The comic book version of Superman remains a significant part of DC’s current publishing lineup and has enjoyed widespread popularity, particularly with the ongoing big storyline. Action Comics provides a reinterpretation of Superboy’s time, shedding light on the origins of our favorite heroes. Moreover, there have been numerous captivating miniseries, with the latest being Adventures of Superman: The Book of El. This series brings back Philip Kennedy Johnson, who wrote the acclaimed “Warworld Saga,” and continues storylines from that epic. Adventures of Superman: The Book of El immerses readers in a grim future where the world was conquered while Superman was drawn away by an enigmatic force.
The Adventures of Superman: The Book of El #1 is terrific, skillfully carrying on the narrative threads of one of the finest contemporary Superman stories. The story concludes in a bleak future, and we delve into the pages of the title’s Book of El, penned by the progeny of Superman’s kin. These entries reveal intriguing tidbits, such as Warworld’s destiny. A notable character has assumed control over the planet, marking a significant shift from the usual circumstances on Warworld. The most astonishing revelation is the ruler of the planet – Conner Kent, who goes by the moniker Superboy. Given what we learned in the “Warworld Saga” and our knowledge about Superboy, this twist fits well.
Superboy Belongs on Warworld
The Book of El” #1, we learn that Superman’s former ally Kryl-Ux regained control of the planet and used it to launch an attack on Earth. At some point after Kryl-Ux took over, Superboy found himself on Warworld and eventually became its new ruler, assuming the role of warlord.
When people often imagine Conner Kent, they picture the trendy ’90s teenage version of the character. However, Superboy is not merely a cool superpowered teenager with stylish hair and a fashionable jacket. He’s a warrior. Ever since his escape from Cadmus, he’s been in countless battles. In fact, he managed to defeat Superboy-Prime, a significantly stronger full-blooded Kryptonian, which is an accomplishment few can claim.
In the 2024 “Action Comics” story titled “Phantoms,” Superboy teamed up with Superman (the Chinese Superman) to repel a Khund invasion. The Khunds are essentially the DC Universe’s version of the Klingons, a formidable alien race that thrives on conflict. Superboy single-handedly defeated one of their top generals in hand-to-hand combat and even gained control over a Khund army. Using this army, he helped capture Phantom Zone criminals who had escaped. I highly recommend reading Action Comics issues 1070-1081; not only is the main story impressive, but there’s also an exceptional Supergirl backup tale.
Superboy’s actions have shown that he’s more than just the coolest member of the Superman family; he’s also a powerful warrior who has earned the respect of alien combatants. Taking control of Warworld might seem uncharacteristic to those unfamiliar with his background, but his heroics prove that he’s fully capable of being the kind of hero that controls such a realm.
Superboy Was Built for War
One lesser-known fact about Superboy is that he’s not just about style, impressive outfits, and intriguing abilities (his tactile telekinesis is underutilized by many creators). Originally conceived by Cadmus as a potential substitute for Superman in the event of his demise, Superboy was designed to wage wars and safeguard Earth. Intriguingly, he carries within him DNA from Lex Luthor, which adds complexity to his character. Given his military background and genetic makeup, Superboy’s role as leader of Warworld seems fittingly appropriate.
Additionally, it aligns with everything we’ve gathered about Warworld from “Warworld Saga”. Warworld values its strongest fighters, and Superboy is indeed an ideal candidate for leading this world. He has demonstrated his warrior abilities on numerous occasions in the past, and through “Adventures of Superman: The Book of El“, we may witness his future, enabling more individuals to appreciate the strength of the Steel-Teen.
