The “Absolute Green Lantern” comic series has taken the classic Green Lantern lore and given it an intriguing twist. The Absolute DC Universe is known for reimagining the established DC Multiverse in innovative ways, altering many aspects about the characters and their realms. “Absolute Green Lantern” redefines the Green Lantern Corps, the Electromagnetic Emotional Spectrum, and the Earth’s various Lanterns by placing them in fresh surroundings.
In issue #1 of “Absolute Green Lantern,” an alien attack on Evergreen, California is depicted, with an extraterrestrial named Abin Sur as the judge of the situation. Characters like Jo Mullein, Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner are all taken by Sur. Mullein and Jordan are bestowed with powers: Mullein gets control over green energy, which she directs through a ring, while Jordan receives the power of the Black Hand.
In “Absolute Green Lantern” #6, readers finally get the answers they’ve been seeking since the beginning of the book, yet it also uncovers something alarming: Mogo, the planet-sized Green Lantern, exists in this universe, but he doesn’t serve as a Green Lantern; instead, he is a servant of the Blackstars.
As a movie reviewer, I’d say:
“In my experience, the Green Lantern Corps is bursting with extraordinary characters hailing from galaxies far and wide. Yet, none quite compare to Mogo – a unique entity among them all. First introduced in a supplementary tale of ‘Green Lantern’ Vol. 2 #188, titled “Mogo Doesn’t Socialize”, penned by the legendary duo Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons from the Watchmen team. Over time, Mogo has become an essential pillar of the Green Lantern Corps, earning a special place in fans’ hearts.
Interestingly enough, linking Mogo to the Blackstars – a group of villains debuted in Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp’s ‘The Green Lantern’ series – adds an intriguing twist. This connection could potentially have profound implications for the budding faction of Absolute Lanterns, which might be a game-changer, or perhaps even lead to their downfall.
Mogo Kept the Green Lantern Going but Is Now Home to the Blackstars

In Green Lantern lore, Mogo and the Blackstars are two captivating entities worthy of mention. Among them, Mogo stands out as a sentient planet, capable of conversing with the Green Lantern Corps through holograms. The comic book titled “Mogo Doesn’t Socialize” revolves around a bounty hunter who seeks Mogo, only to discover an intriguing truth – the target was not a being residing on another planet but rather the planet itself! Throughout various Green Lantern narratives, Mogo has frequently made appearances, though its impact often remains subdued, serving more as a backdrop than a central character.
During “The Sinestro Corps War”, it became clear that Mogo, beyond being an entire planet and potentially extremely powerful, served a crucial role for the Green Lantern Corps: it assisted the Green Lantern rings in finding their next user. The Corps fought valiantly to protect Mogo against the Sinestro Corps’ attack. If Mogo had been destroyed, the Green Lantern Corps would have faced extinction because they wouldn’t have been able to replenish themselves. Fortunately, the Green Lantern Corps emerged victorious, but Mogo could only survive for a few more years before meeting its end. Later on, Mogo was reformed from its debris field, but it hasn’t played as significant a role as it did previously, as the Corps managed to find ways to continue without it.
The Blackstars originated from the Darkstars, an intergalactic peacekeeping organization that emerged following the annihilation of the Green Lantern Corps at the hands of Parallax. They served as the principal antagonists in Morrison and Sharp’s initial 12-issue run of Green Lantern, with their tale concluding in Green Lantern: Blackstars. The Blackstars were brought into being by Controller Mu, who belonged to a distinct evolution of the Oans. Hal Jordan was subsequently dispatched on a mission to spy among them.
Jordan managed to acquire a tool that could shift the universe’s course, allowing them to influence minds almost universally. Later, Jordan freed themselves from the Blackstars’ grip and overcame them. Interestingly, they aren’t connected to the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum, making their appearance in “Absolute Green Lantern” intriguing. Instead, they seem linked to the dark energy of death in the Absolute Universe, and have apparently seized control of Mogo, as there was no Green Lantern Corps present to team up with.
Everything We Know About the Green Lantern Mythos is Wrong

Combining the concepts of Mogo and the Blackstars, coupled with the dark energy of death, makes for an intriguing concept, typically characteristic of the Absolute Green Lantern series. Although it may not be the top Absolute DC book – each title in the collection is outstanding, even the weakest outperforming 95% of other comics – it has significantly impacted the Green Lantern universe more than any other. In particular, Absolute Green Lantern #6 showcases the most dramatic alterations. Among these changes, Blackstar Mogo wielding the power of death that was once in the possession of Hal Jordan stands out as one of the most notable transformations.
The Green Lantern universe has grown quite expansive over time. For quite a while, the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum played a significant role in the Green Lantern comics, and at times it felt repetitive. However, with the release of Absolute Green Lantern, this concept was reimagined, blended with cosmic dread, and transformed dramatically. Blackstar Mogo serves as an illustration of this shift, acting as a harbinger of destruction for the planet. The warning has been given – Mogo is approaching, and he carries death in his wake.
