Netflix’s selection of family-friendly movies has been a little thin lately. Popular franchises like Shrek, Despicable Me, and Kung Fu Panda were removed from the service over the past few months (though some are returning soon), leaving a gap in animated options for kids. However, that changed over the weekend with the addition of a popular movie from Nickelodeon, and it’s clear many families were eager for something new to watch.
The movie PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie became available on Netflix in the US on Sunday and quickly became popular. By Monday, it had climbed to the number two spot on Netflix’s list of most-watched movies, right behind Wake Up Dead Man. It seems families were looking for a new kids’ film, and PAW Patrol is delivering!
Released in 2023, The Mighty Movie is based on the popular PAW Patrol series and follows the pups as they gain superpowers and work to save the world. The film was a huge success for Nickelodeon and Paramount, earning over $200 million despite a $30 million production budget. Compared to the PAW Patrol TV show, the movie boasts a significantly improved visual style and animation, which is a welcome change for parents familiar with the series.
What’s New on Netflix?
Netflix has recently added several popular movies and shows, including potential award winners. Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein was a big hit last month, and that was followed by the release of Jay Kelly, starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler, and the new Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man. In addition to these, a few holiday romantic comedies, like My Secret Santa and A Merry Little Ex-Mas, have also become very popular on the platform.
The streaming service aims to maintain its current success through 2026, starting with a new collection of movies and TV shows available on January 1st – immediately after the finale of Stranger Things. This New Year’s Day release includes films like Hellboy and Dune, plus the return of the popular sci-fi series Falling Skies.
