The BBC and MGM+ are collaborating on a new four-episode series based on Charles Dickens’ famous 1859 novel, A Tale of Two Cities. Kit Harington, known for his role in Game of Thrones, will star as Sydney Carton, a disillusioned English lawyer who becomes entangled in the French Revolution and discovers hidden depths of courage and selflessness.
We’re getting our first look at the upcoming limited series with images like the one shown above, featuring Kit Harington in a striking, direct gaze. The character of Sydney Carton is a well-known one, famously portrayed on screen by actors like Ronald Colman in a 1935 film and Chris Sarandon in a 1980 television adaptation.
We’ll also be introduced to Lucie Manette, a young woman whose life is turned upside down by news from Paris. She learns her father, believed to have died almost 20 years ago, might still be alive. Mirren Mack will play the role of Lucie.

Charles Darnay, a French immigrant with strong beliefs, delivers a message before being arrested in England and accused of treason. Lucie asks Sydney Carton to help save him. François Civil, who will play Darnay, is featured below.

The story centers around a love triangle involving Lucie, Carton, and Darnay. Both men compete for Lucie’s affection, leaving her conflicted. Despite their physical resemblance, they are very different people, and their lives become intertwined through shared experiences – including happiness, hardship, marriage, and even murder – ultimately linking them together until the very end.
It’s crucial to the plot of this 167-year-old story that Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton resemble each other. In the 1980 Hallmark adaptation, Chris Sarandon famously played both characters. Now, see if you think the actors in this new version capture that same likeness.

It appears the upcoming TV adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities is making some changes to the story. The book quickly establishes Lucie’s romantic choice, but the show’s description suggests a love triangle, which is unexpected. However, the BBC is known for being faithful to classic literature, so it’s best to wait and see how the series unfolds when it premieres later this year. It will be shown on BBC One in the UK and MGM+ in the US.
Kit Harington often appears in historical dramas. He previously starred in the 2017 show Gunpowder, which depicted a failed plot to kill the king in 1605. He’s reuniting with Daniel West, who co-created Gunpowder and is writing this new adaptation of A Tale of Two Cities – they clearly had a good working relationship. Richard Clark, known for directing episodes of Doctor Who and Outlander, is directing the limited series.
If you’re eager to see Kit Harington in historical clothing again, he recently appeared in The Dreadful, a show set in 15th-century England. He acted alongside his Game of Thrones colleague, Sophie Turner, in that production.
