Though Toonami was once removed from Cartoon Network, it made a successful comeback when it began airing on Adult Swim. A major factor in its return was the popularity of Dragon Ball Z, which introduced many viewers to Goku’s story through this platform. The series has consistently been featured on Toonami ever since. Now, in a surprising turn of events, Dragon Ball Z Kai is leaving its regular timeslot on Cartoon Network, with another popular anime series taking its place later this month.
Starting February 23rd, Sailor Moon will be airing on Cartoon Network’s Toonami, taking over the timeslot previously held by Dragon Ball Z Kai. Dragon Ball Z Kai used to air weekdays at 5 AM Eastern. Sailor Moon isn’t new to Adult Swim, having originally aired in 1998. It recently appeared as part of “Toonami Rewind,” a block of classic shows, but that block was canceled due to low viewership. Hopefully, Sailor Moon will have better luck with this new schedule when it starts later this month.

Even though Sailor Moon is replacing Dragon Ball on Toonami this month, Dragon Ball has a lot more exciting things planned for the future. Earlier this year, the Dragon Ball Genki Dama Festival announced that a new season of Dragon Ball Super is coming, adapting the Galactic Patrol storyline. Plus, they have another project in the works: Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, which will be a remake of the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods movie. Using updated animation techniques that have boosted One Piece‘s popularity, Beerus promises to have even better visuals than the original.
It’s currently unknown if Sailor Moon will get another anime season. The last installment, Sailor Moon Cosmos, which finished adapting the original manga storyline, was released in two parts in 2023. If the series does return, it would likely be a fresh start, as the anime has now covered all of the stories written by creator Naoko Takeuchi.
It’s interesting that Takeuchi is gaining attention through her work with her husband, Yoshihiro Togashi, the creator of popular series like Hunter x Hunter and Yu Yu Hakusho. Although their characters haven’t officially appeared together in one story, there’s still a possibility it could happen.
