A24’s Death Stranding Video Game Adaptation Teases Character Details

A24 takes a short break from its horror streak and enters the world of video game adaptations.

A24 and Kojima Productions are partnering to create a movie based on the popular sci-fi video game Death Stranding. While details about the story are still being kept under wraps as the film is in the early stages of production, the script is almost finished.

During an appearance on IGN Live to discuss his new film, The Death of Robin Hood, director Michael Sarnoski also shared news about the Death Stranding movie he’s working on for A24. He said the script is progressing well and hinted that some popular characters from the game could be included.

I’m really excited about the script! Sarnoski has been collaborating directly with Hideo Kojima, the creator of Death Stranding, on it. Kojima has already read the first draft and is now working with Sarnoski and A24 to refine it. From what I understand, everyone is really pleased with the story Sarnoski came up with.

Sarnoski says Kojima is giving him a lot of creative control over the Death Stranding movie. Like Zach Cregger did with the Resident Evil reboot, he wants to put his own spin on the story with fresh characters and plotlines, all while staying true to the original game and what fans love about it. The movie will primarily focus on new characters, but a few faces from the games will also make appearances.

Sarnoski explained he was excited to create a new story with his own characters, letting him build on the things he loves most about the Death Stranding universe. He also promised fans that his version would feel like a seamless fit within the world Hideo Kojima built.

I’m currently writing the script and getting close to finishing! I’m incredibly excited about this project. I’ve been collaborating closely with Hideo Kojima and A24, and they’ve already read a draft. We’re now working through revisions together, and thankfully, they seem really pleased with how it’s going. Kojima has been amazing, giving me the freedom to create my own story and characters within his universe, while still staying true to the spirit of the game and making something fans will love. It’s been a fantastic experience so far, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.

What really drew me into Death Stranding wasn’t just the open world, but the freedom to create a character with a personal story within it. The game explores such powerful ideas – connection, self-expression – that finding a role that felt authentic and allowed me to really immerse myself was surprisingly easy. It’s a world that invites you to build something meaningful, and I found myself doing just that.

Death Stranding is an action-adventure game and the first title developed by Kojima Productions after becoming independent from Konami in 2015. It originally launched on PlayStation 4 in November 2019, then came to Windows in 2020. An enhanced ‘Director’s Cut’ followed on PlayStation 5 in 2021, and it has since been released for PC, Apple devices, Amazon Luna, and Xbox Series X|S.

Okay, so the story starts after the president, Bridget Strand, tries to bring her son, Sam, back to life. It goes horribly wrong and she ends up merging our world with this place called the Beach – it’s basically the game’s version of purgatory. It’s a disaster, wiping out almost everyone! Now, you play as Sam, and it’s all about him trying to be a hero. He’s traveling across the country, delivering supplies to the few survivors, but it’s seriously dangerous out there – tons of creepy creatures and other threats are trying to stop him.

As of today, A24 hasn’t announced a firm release date for their Death Stranding film. But the buzz is that we can expect to see it in cinemas sometime in 2027, which honestly, feels like a long way off, but I’m already excited!
