A24’s Elden Ring movie just got a release date and a huge casting update.
The upcoming fantasy movie, based on the popular video game Elden Ring, has announced its complete cast and a release date of 2028 in IMAX. Directed and written by Alex Garland, known for his recent films Civil War (2024) and the upcoming Warfare (2025), the movie will closely follow the story and elements of the bestselling action RPG from FromSoftware.
As a huge cinema fan, I was thrilled to hear that Elden Ring is officially coming to the big screen! Bandai Namco just announced it’ll be in theaters on March 3, 2028, and they’ve already started filming – even in IMAX, which is fantastic news! They’ve also revealed the incredible cast: Kit Connor, Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Price, Ruby Cruz, Nick Offerman, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz. I can’t wait to see this!
Details about the movie’s story haven’t been released yet. The Elden Ring video game centers around a character called the Tarnished, who was exiled from a dark fantasy world called the Lands Between. After a catastrophic event known as the Shattering plunged the land into darkness, the Tarnished is brought back to life with a mission: defeat seven powerful Demigods, each holding a piece of the Elden Ring, and become the Elden Lord.
Since its release in 2022, this game has become a massive hit, selling over 30 million copies on different platforms. It’s also been highly praised by critics, who consider it one of the best video games ever made. In 2024, a major expansion called Shadow of the Erdtree was released and quickly sold another 10 million copies.
I’m really excited to see A24 taking on this project! They’re usually known for smaller, independent films, so it’s a big deal to see them doing something with the potential for an IMAX release. But honestly, they’ve been supporting Alex Garland’s ambitious visions for a while now – Civil War cost around $50 million, which is a huge budget for them, and it proves they’re willing to go all-in on a great story.
