Critics are buzzing about Undertone.
Ian Tuason’s first feature film, the new horror movie Undertone, centers on a podcast host (Nina Kiri, known from The Handmaid’s Tale) who discovers some recordings that might be summoning a dangerous force into the home where she’s caring for her sick mother. Undertone will be in theaters starting March 13th.
With the release of Undertone just a week away, reviews are pouring in from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, following initial reactions from screenings at the Fantasia and Sundance festivals. The film currently has an 88% rating on the Tomatometer, and while this could change as more reviews are added, it’s on track to become “Certified Fresh” once enough reviews are collected.
Reviews for Undertone are generally positive, though some are mixed. While it’s received some average scores, like 2.5/4 and a C+, many critics have given it very high ratings. James Preston Poole of But Why Tho? even gave it a perfect 10 out of 10, describing it as a movie that feels like it’s actively trying to curse viewers.
If Undertone keeps its current high rating, it might break a frustrating trend for A24 horror films. Over the past two years, while some A24 horror movies like I Saw the TV Glow and MaXXXine were initially well-received, most of their serious horror releases have repeatedly switched between being labeled ‘Fresh’ and ‘Rotten’ on Rotten Tomatoes, a pattern that continued through 2025.
Undertone received a strong score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, closely following the 89% “Certified Fresh” rating earned by the new horror film Bring Her Back (from the directors of Talk to Me). Here’s a look at how A24’s horror movies have been rated on Rotten Tomatoes since I Saw the TV Glow was released in May 2024:
| Title | RT Score |
|---|---|
| Undertone (2026) | 88% |
| Bring Her Back (2025) | 89% |
| Opus (2025) | 39% |
| Heretic (2024) | 90% |
| The Front Room (2024) | 40% |
| MaXXXine (2024) | 73% |
| I Saw the TV Glow (2024) | 85% |
Whether A24 will continue its success with upcoming horror movies is still uncertain. However, they have a strong lineup of films planned, created by well-known filmmakers, which suggests they could receive positive reviews.
Following their film Undertone, they’ve released several other titles, including Backrooms starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve (nominated for the 2026 Best Actress Oscar), Onslaught directed by Adam Wingard, and October from Jeremy Saulnier.
