Gearbox Software has been a good supporter of Nintendo consoles, releasing several games for the Switch. They initially planned to continue this support by bringing the looter shooter Borderlands 4 to the Switch 2 after releasing it on other systems. Unfortunately, after some difficulties, the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 has been canceled.
According to Variety, Take-Two Interactive has removed the planned Nintendo Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 from its list of upcoming releases. A Take-Two representative, Alan Lewis, stated the company had “paused development” of the Switch 2 version, but Gearbox will continue working on the game for other platforms. Lewis didn’t explain the reason for this decision, and the official Borderlands social media accounts haven’t yet commented on the news.
Getting Borderlands 4 onto the Switch 2 hasn’t been easy. Fans were concerned when Gearbox president Randy Pitchford mentioned the game would primarily run at 30 frames per second – a lower rate than many expect for a fast-paced shooter. He also stated that even those who buy a physical copy of the game will need to download additional content, which is something Switch 2 players generally dislike.
He followed up with a video discussing the Switch 2 release date, reassuring fans who were worried. Unfortunately, that date had to be pushed back a few months when the port’s development was delayed with no new release timeframe announced. The official announcement explained that the Switch 2 port needed more time for development and refinement, and this news came just over a week before the original planned launch.
Borderlands 4 Has Had Technical Issues on Other Platforms

Even on powerful consoles like the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and PCs, Borderlands 4 launched with technical problems. Digital Foundry detailed these issues, which included inconsistent and declining frame rates, as well as screen tearing. While some of these problems were fixed after release, the situation was made worse by comments from the game’s CEO, who responded defensively to criticism and blamed others for the poor performance around launch.
So, Borderlands 4 is still getting a ton of support on other platforms! They’ve already added bosses, weapons, and all sorts of stuff in previous updates, but just recently they dropped a big one with a full-on photo mode, plus a bunch of tweaks and bug fixes. I checked out the latest roadmap, and it looks like they’ve got a good plan for free and paid content coming throughout 2026. The season pass is still delivering, and it’s going to be huge – two new story expansions, two extra maps, two new characters to play as, and tons of cosmetics, guns, and gear. They’re aiming for the first story DLC in early 2026, and the second one should be out around the third quarter of the year, if the roadmap is accurate.
This cancellation means Gearbox is no longer planning to release games on Nintendo Switch for the time being. Luckily, most of the Borderlands series – including Borderlands, Borderlands 2, Borderlands 3, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Tales From the Borderlands, and New Tales From the Borderlands – are all available on the original Switch. However, the spin-off Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, released in 2022, isn’t available on the platform.
