A$AP Rocky Reveals Who Encouraged Him and Rihanna to Date

A$AP Rocky’s mom knew when she saw loveeeeeee.

Rapper Rakim Mayers—known as A$AP Rocky—shared that his mother, Renee Black, initially suggested he try dating Rihanna, and the two eventually became partners.

You know, my mom always had a knack for knowing things. She used to playfully tease me, saying things like, ‘I see you’re into this girl you’re with,’ but then she’d add, ‘I really think you should be with Rihanna!’ She wouldn’t tell me what she knew, and I’m keeping her confidence, but that’s what she always said. It was hilarious, honestly, but she definitely had a vision!

He explained that he used to tell his mother, “Why do you keep saying that? That girl isn’t interested in me like that. Just relax, Mom – she’s just a friend. Calm down.”

But nevertheless, Renee persisted.

“‘I’m telling you, she real,’” A$AP added. “And mothers know best.”

As a lifestyle observer, I’ve been following Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s relationship, and it’s been lovely to see it blossom! What started as a strong friendship back in late 2019 has beautifully evolved, and they’ve since welcomed three amazing little ones into their lives – RZA, who’s three, Riot, who’s two, and baby Rocki, who’s just three months old!

A$AP Rocky still feels like he and Rihanna were destined to be together.

You know, talking to Rihanna felt instantly familiar. We were born in the same year, which is wild! And it gets even cooler – my dad is actually from her home country. When I visit family back home, I get to connect with both sides, and we have so much in common. It’s honestly hilarious how similar our backgrounds are, and we end up laughing about it all the time.

And even before they became a couple, their friendship held something just a little extra.

“She was always my boo, you know what I’m saying?” A$AP said. “Like I always f–ked with her.”

Even though she knew they would be very happy together, the 37-year-old wouldn’t change anything about how things happened.

He said he was grateful she came into his life when she did, because he wasn’t sure he’d been ready for a relationship like theirs before that moment. He added that she probably hadn’t been ready either.

Rihanna also believes their relationship was meant to be. She’s said that if it hadn’t been for the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, she and A$AP Rocky might not be together today.

She told Interview Magazine in 2024 that the COVID-19 pandemic actually brought them closer together quickly. She believes this happened because they were meant to start a family, and without the pandemic, they would have taken much longer to feel comfortable and certain they were ready for that next step.

Instead, they “didn’t even really talk about” their relationship evolving.

Honestly, it was just… everything changed. It felt like the most incredible thing that could possibly happen, and it just… clicked. It wasn’t planned, it just happened, and I knew instantly it was the best thing that ever happened to us. I mean, seriously, the best.

She normally hates sweets, but she was all about cookies and donuts! She said she finally just had to tell them, and they were just as shocked as the rest of us were when we found out! It’s just…Rihanna is a queen, and keeping something like that secret is amazing!

And baby makes three! Multiple outlets report that the couple welcomed a baby in Los Angeles.

She debuted her second pregnancy during the 2023 Super Bowl halftime show.

The couple recently had a baby boy named Riot, and a month later, they shared some family photos for the first time, showing all four of them together.

Rihanna confirmed her romance with A$AP began at the end of 2019. 

She explained in an interview published on April 9th that they were both familiar with each other’s romantic lives, having witnessed each other in relationships before. Knowing how strongly they could affect each other – for better or worse – they approached dating very carefully.

Rihanna is expecting her third child! She announced the news just before attending the 2025 Met Gala.

Rihanna revealed she had a baby girl, named Rocki Irish Mayers, by sharing photos on Instagram. The pictures show Rihanna holding her newborn, playfully framed by a pair of pink boxing gloves.
