Absolute Aquaman is Coming to DC Comics, But is There Really Room for Him?

DC Comics’ Absolute line has been a huge hit since launching a year ago, offering beautifully repackaged and expanded versions of classic stories, like the intense battles in Absolute Batman and the mind-bending adventures of Absolute Martian Manhunter. Despite this success, many dedicated fans feel a key character or series is still missing from the collection. The big question now is whether there’s room to include everything fans want in the Absolute Universe.

Despite most of the original Justice League members getting stories in the ‘Absolute’ universe, Aquaman is notably absent. The ‘Absolute’ line started with just three titles and has since expanded, with more planned for next year and new heroes appearing in existing series. However, a recent comment from a creator suggests an ‘Absolute’ Aquaman story might be coming soon, giving fans reason to be optimistic.

Yes, the Absolute Universe is Getting Aquaman

As a huge comic book and movie fan, I was thrilled to hear some positive news about a potential ‘Absolute’ version of Aquaman! For a while, it felt like just a rumor, but Kelly Thompson, who’s doing amazing work on ‘Absolute Wonder Woman,’ recently let slip that it’s definitely being discussed. She was chatting with the Splash Pages Comic Book Club and basically confirmed people at DC are ‘for sure talking about it.’ What really got me excited was when she mentioned they wouldn’t have allowed her to include the Trident of Poseidon in her Wonder Woman series unless they were seriously considering an Absolute Aquaman book. That’s a pretty big hint, and it makes me really hopeful we’ll get to see it!

If you haven’t been following Absolute Wonder Woman, the latest storyline involved Diana searching for her Amazonian sisters. Her quest led her to Area 41, a hidden facility where supernatural creatures are held captive. There, she clashed with Clea, a prisoner from Atlantis who controlled the facility’s magical maze. Diana also discovered the Trident of Poseidon, a powerful, living weapon made of water. Ultimately, Wonder Woman used the Trident to free Clea and her people, the Men-Fish, so they could search for any remnants of their lost Atlantean civilization.

While it’s not a definite confirmation, Thompson mentioned Aquaman is being considered for the Absolute Universe. She couldn’t say if he’d appear in another character’s comic or get his own series, but he is definitely part of the discussion. This is the most promising news fans have had about a potential Absolute Aquaman in a while, and they’re now excitedly debating what this means and when we might see him.

Is Now the Right Time for DC’s Absolute Line to Have an Aquaman Series?

I’ve wanted to see a collection of definitive Aquaman stories for some time, and I get why DC hasn’t released one yet. They just launched a new ongoing Aquaman comic in January, and historically, Aquaman hasn’t really supported having two series running at the same time. The last time they tried something similar was with Aquaman and the Others, which ran alongside the New 52 Aquaman comic, but even that didn’t last a year. It’s not simply about whether Aquaman can support another title, though.

A key strength of the Absolute Universe is its measured pace. DC hasn’t overloaded the market with content, carefully expanding from three books to six over six months. We’re still waiting for confirmed release dates for the next two series, Absolute Green Arrow and Absolute Catwoman, and that’s a good thing. This approach keeps the line feeling new and exciting without being overwhelming for both longtime fans and newcomers.

I’d love to see a deluxe ‘Absolute’ edition of Aquaman comics, but DC shouldn’t feel pressured to make it happen right away. It seems odd that Aquaman is the only original Justice League member who doesn’t have one of these collections, and he definitely deserves to be recognized. However, DC should wait until they have a really strong concept for it. The ‘Absolute’ series has a good reputation with fans, and releasing an Aquaman edition before it’s fully ready wouldn’t benefit anyone. But when the time is right, DC absolutely should give Aquaman the ‘Absolute’ treatment.
