Absolute Batman Creator Reveals The Origin of Absolute Joker

The “Ultimate Batman” series, published by DC Comics, has earned a notable place as one of the largest comic books, offering a fresh, dramatic portrayal of the Dark Knight and several of his adversaries. During this year’s Dragoncon, the series writer, Scott Snyder, shared insights on the latest incarnation of the Joker, explaining its origins and highlighting what sets it apart from the original version.

At this year’s Dragon Con, Snyder shared his thoughts on how the character of Absolute Joker would evolve to fit Batman’s new world: “For me, the Joker is always Batman’s opposite. So if Absolute Batman represents a certain ideology, the Joker could be a billionaire with all the resources, mocking Bruce by telling him he can never achieve anything. The Joker issue then explores who he might place in Batman’s path – since the Joker operates on both sides of the law, he creates crime and provides means to stop it. In essence, the Joker is constantly manipulating us, and the ‘Joker Issue’ delves into what a clown represents to the Joker and why he finds them amusing.

Snyder detailed that the story will delve into the Joker’s ancestry, going back to the 1800s in Gotham City, where his great-great grandfather was a street clown. The narrative explores this clown’s past, gradually becoming darker and more complex. It questions the nature of clowns, their appeal, and whether they represent mockery or our own foolishness. In mythology, clowns are seen as the only ones who survive everything and laugh at us as we perish.

Given that Bruce has transformed into the Joker who embodies chaos and disruption, it follows that the traditional image of the Joker is synonymous with order and stability within this fictional universe. Thus, one could infer that the Joker might possess a secret lair like Batcave, a luxurious mansion, an attractive appearance, and be known for high-society events. It’s also possible that he could have Robin-like figures accompanying him.

The Absolute Joker So Far

So far, 11 issues of “Absolute Batman” have been released for DC Comics enthusiasts to explore, each one showcasing an epic battle between Batman and Bane. Initially dispatched by The Joker to confront Gotham’s guardian, Bane delivers a more intense portrayal compared to his original character, significantly amplifying his strength. The Joker in this new series remains shrouded in mystery, but based on what we’ve encountered so far, he might well be the most unsettling version of a comic book villain yet.

Instead of always sporting a perpetual grin and his signature green-haired, pale skin look, Absolute Joker seems to suffer from an illness that makes him resemble the actual Clown Prince of Crime in private. To maintain a normal appearance, he requires periodic blood transfusions from captive young individuals whom he keeps hostage as he orchestrates everything secretly. This grim debut for the character hints at Snyder’s intention to delve deeper into the Joker’s backstory in the upcoming fifteenth issue of the series, as he has already expressed on social media.

Scott Snyder, previously known for his extensive work with Batman, later moved on to become a key architect in DC Comics’ Absolute Universe. In 2011, he was appointed as the lead writer for the Batman series within DC’s New 52, introducing innovative elements like the Court of Owls into Gotham. Although Snyder has since passed the responsibility of writing Batman to different creative teams, the Absolute Batman series has been a resounding success for DC Comics, offering a fresh perspective on Bruce Wayne. When The Joker and Batman ultimately clash, it’s anticipated as a significant moment in the comic book world.
