DC’s Absolute Universe is incredibly popular, and the success is largely thanks to its three main heroes: Wonder Woman, Batman, and Superman. While all three series are great, Absolute Batman has become the biggest hit. The character is already popular enough to have action figures, and now a video game based on Absolute Batman is coming out – and it looks fantastic!
The popular miniatures game, Batman: Gotham City Chronicles, is entering its fourth season with a new star: Absolute Batman. Monolith is bringing Batman’s world from the Absolute Universe to the tabletop later this year through a Gamefound crowdfunding campaign. Players will be able to control iconic characters like Batman, Alfred Pennyworth, and Black Mask in battles fought on a unique, three-level vertical battlefield, recreating the atmosphere of Gotham City. You can stay updated on the campaign here.

What Should Fans Expect From Absolute Batman’s Expansion In Batman: Gotham City Chronicles?

Okay, so we’re just getting the first bits of info on the Absolute Batman expansion, but here’s what I’ve gathered! When it launches, you’ll need the Batman: Gotham City Chronicles base game to actually play the new Absolute Batman campaign – it’ll be released in season 4. And that’s awesome! They’re also adding a solo and co-op mode, which sounds really cool, but you can still enjoy the classic asymmetrical gameplay if you prefer. I’m really excited about this!
The game is set in the Absolute Universe, focusing on the world of Batman. So far, we’ve seen figures representing Batman, Alfred Pennyworth, Black Mask, and his many followers. The initial storylines will center around Black Mask as the main villain, with support from characters like Alfred, Gordon, and Bruce’s established allies – Waylon, Harvey, Oswald, Edward, and Selina. However, characters like Mr. Freeze and The Joker will appear more frequently as the story progresses.
Throughout the series, we see the supporting characters fully develop into their iconic roles, often through difficult experiences. We also get to see Selina Kyle become Catwoman, and Wonder Woman joins the story for the first time, creating an exciting team-up. New villains like Bane and Poison Ivy have also made a big impact. With the game’s campaign launching this year, these recent story developments could be included, but we’ll have to wait and find out.
A key new feature is the ability to build upwards. This means you can realistically recreate multi-level buildings in the game using supporting structures for each floor – which is perfect for Gotham City battles. The developers showcased a fight between Batman and Black Mask on a rooftop, with Alfred battling enemies on a lower level, and more reinforcements arriving on the ground. This adds a dramatic, cinematic feel, stays true to the world of Batman, and could also help make the game run more efficiently.
We’ll share more information as we get closer to the game’s release, and we’re excited to see what’s new! We’re hoping some of the latest characters and storylines from the comics will be included too.
