In a surprising twist, the comic series “Absolute Batman” shows a different side of the Dark Knight, one that readers may not anticipate. Unlike the billionaire playboy version we’re familiar with, this Batman hails from a working-class background as an engineer, proving that he can still instill fear in criminals despite his relative poverty. This alternate universe presents a world where traditional DC heroes find themselves up against powerful corrupt systems instead of common villains. Intriguingly, the Bruce Wayne of this universe has childhood friendships with characters like Harvey Dent, Oswald Cobblepot, Selina Kyle, Edward Nigma, and Waylon Jones – individuals who are typically portrayed as Batman’s adversaries in the main DC continuity. Instead, in the Absolute Universe, these friends become his closest allies and potential vulnerabilities.
At first, Bruce was secretive about his night-time activities as a vigilante. But when confronted by the villain Black Mask, he realized he needed his friends’ aid and resources to defeat this dangerous psychopath. He revealed his identity as Batman, but after defeating Black Mask, he wanted to keep them out of his personal battle. However, his friends insisted they wouldn’t abandon him in his mission against the corrupt private prison Ark M, which conducts sinister human experiments on its prisoners. Now, Bruce’s companions Harvey, Oswald, Eddie, and Waylon find themselves entangled in Bruce’s fight against Ark M. Unfortunately, they have drawn the attention of Bane, Ark M’s most lethal weapon.
Bruce’s Friends are His Support System

A key difference between Batman from the primary universe and Batman from the Absolute Universe revolves around their motivations. In the mainstream DC narrative, Batman’s pursuit has been anchored in revenge since the tragic loss of his parents. With few friends or family to turn to after Alfred, Batman’s bitterness and remorse grew, eventually transforming into a relentless drive to punish Gotham’s criminals for their wrongdoings. His global travels aimed at mastering protection skills often resulted in fleeting connections with his peers and mentors. For years, his revenge mission occupied most of his heart, leaving little space for forming bonds with others. Although his objective evolved over time to safeguarding Gotham’s citizens and amassing a team of fellow crime-fighters, deep within, Batman remains the tormented and isolated avenger he always was.
In the vast cosmos, Bruce manages to escape a similar destiny thanks to his longstanding companions who remained by his side throughout their shared journey. Following the demise of his father, Bruce sought solitude, but his mother, Martha, along with his friends, thwarted this attempt. These friends were his classmates, who had all been present during the traumatic event of Bruce’s father’s murder at the zoo. They aided him in coping with the trauma and helped shape him into a mentally stronger individual. Despite the support he received, Bruce made a solemn vow to don a mask and wage war against the pervasive corruption that grips Gotham City. Unbeknownst to his friends, Bruce honed their abilities and knowledge, transforming himself into a formidable crime-fighter. Armed with these skills, Bruce fights not for retribution, but for the city and community he cherishes deeply.
When Bruce put on the bat-suit for good, he attempted to distance himself from those dear to him, believing it was necessary for their safety. However, his friends proved persistent, unwilling to let him withdraw from society. Even as chaos reigned in Gotham, orchestrated by Black Mask, they continued reaching out to him. A turning point came when Bruce confided in Harvey, Ozzie, Eddie, and Waylon about his identity as Batman. Their response was immediate – they joined him in his quest to save Gotham. They equipped him with resources and intel for his mission to scrutinize Ark M, a suspect organization involved in illicit activities. By sharing his secret, Bruce not only found powerful allies but also gained renewed determination to shield them and the city he cherished. However, this deep affection leaves Bruce vulnerable, a fact that Ark M plans to leverage against him.
Bane Will Use Bruce’s Friends Against Him

In much the same way as a supervillain might target the loved ones of a superhero to weaken them, Ark M aimed at Bruce’s close associates, his informants and friends. Using this intelligence, they abducted Waylon and subjected him to cruel experiments. Though Bruce valiantly attempted to rescue Waylon, he was overpowered by Ark M’s enforcer, the fearsome Bane. Following months of brutal captivity and testing, Bruce miraculously managed to free himself from Ark M’s stronghold. Regrettably, it was too late for Waylon as he underwent a horrific transformation into Killer Croc during his imprisonment. Remarkably, even with his metamorphosis, Waylon retained some of his original memories and assisted Bruce in escaping from Ark M.
In the comic “Absolute Batman #11,” it’s revealed that Ark M and Bane facilitated Bruce’s escape as part of a trial designed to break his spirit, with Bane aiming to transform Batman into a merciless fighter like himself. Bane perceives similarities between himself and Bruce, a man who once had steadfast beliefs for the protection of his community, but who sacrificed family and humanity in pursuit of his mission. Bane seeks to embitter Bruce, pushing him to accept the choices he made in the past. To shatter Batman’s spirit, Bane intends to exploit Bruce’s motivation for fighting-protecting those he cares about.
The issue concludes with a tense standoff between Harvey, Ozzie, Eddie, and a towering agent of Ark M. Perceiving these friends as hindrances to Batman’s destiny, Bane plans to inflict harm upon them to unlock Bruce’s full potential. Given Bruce’s past history of distancing himself from loved ones-both when his father passed away and during his transformation into Batman-the extent of emotional trauma he may endure if more friends are tormented or harmed is uncertain. However, the “Absolute Batman” series thus far suggests that Bruce will fight relentlessly to safeguard those he cherishes.
