Wonder Woman from the Absolute Universe has faced incredible challenges and quickly become a beloved character. She’s wowed fans with her skills and powerful weapons, even defeating formidable enemies like the Tetracide and creatures from the underworld all on her own. However, she’s now up against an opponent who seems unbeatable.
Ever since Wonder Woman appeared, Veronica Cale, a National Security Adviser, has viewed her as a danger and a threat to everything she believes in. After witnessing Wonder Woman’s actions against the Tetracide and the uprising she caused at Area 41, Cale has decided to take drastic measures. She’s unleashed a group of incredibly powerful metahumans – held in a secret, high-security prison – to target Wonder Woman, and one of them is about to present a challenge unlike any she’s faced before.
Absolute Zatanna Puts a Stop to Wonder Woman’s Magic
The latest issue of Absolute Wonder Woman (#16) finds a sense of calm, though Diana senses trouble on the horizon. Steve Trevor faces tough questions at a Senate hearing about his relationship with Wonder Woman, but he firmly defends her, even if it means opposing the government. Meanwhile, Veronica Cale is conducting disturbing experiments on metahuman prisoners, intending to use them to publicly discredit Wonder Woman at a gala held at the Natural History Museum.
The Natural History Museum is hosting a glamorous event celebrating the world of Wonder Woman. While everyone appears to be enjoying themselves, Diana feels a sense of unease, and her instincts are right. She unexpectedly collapses during the gala. Once she recovers, Diana discovers a frightening problem: her powers are still present, but she can’t use them. Realizing the danger, she urges her friends to leave immediately, but it’s already too late.
A woman Diana previously saw in a vision suddenly attacks the museum – it’s Zatanna, now calling herself the Absolute Zatanna, and she’s brought Veronica Cale’s Absolute Suicide Squad with her. Zatanna has a team of villains, including Giganta and Cheetah, but she’s already gained a significant edge over Wonder Woman. She’s magically restricted Diana’s powers, meaning Wonder Woman can’t use her own magic while near Zatanna, and Zatanna is now able to control Diana’s abilities. The Squad quickly surrounds Wonder Woman, who is caught completely off guard and unable to defend herself.
Absolute Wonder Woman is Facing a True Equal Now
The arrival of Absolute Zatanna at the conclusion of the previous storyline immediately signaled trouble for Wonder Woman. Zatanna is renowned throughout the DC Universe as one of its most powerful magic users, and possibly the most powerful. While this new version of Zatanna remains largely mysterious, and we don’t yet know how she compares to the original, it’s clear she’s both incredibly strong and strategically clever. Even before their first encounter, Zatanna managed to cast a spell on Wonder Woman, effectively giving her complete control over Wonder Woman’s magical abilities.
Wonder Woman has dealt with magical enemies before, but Zatanna is different. She’s working with Cale, who is forcing her to use her magic to control Wonder Woman. While members of the Suicide Squad are often coerced into doing things they wouldn’t normally do, Cale is actively pushing Zatanna to go as far as possible. Before the fight even starts, Wonder Woman has lost her biggest strength, and she’s facing what might be the most difficult challenge of her life. Previous villains were tough, but this feels different.
Wonder Woman is in a really tough spot, and it’s unclear how she’ll escape. Zatanna isn’t a magical opponent Wonder Woman can overcome with her own powers. While Diana is a great fighter, it’s questionable whether she’s strong enough to defeat someone whose magic is boosted by Wonder Woman herself. Plus, there’s the rest of the Suicide Squad to worry about. Things are likely to get much harder before they improve, so Wonder Woman will probably need to rely on her fighting skills and find a clever solution, because magic won’t be enough this time.
