Considered a standout in the supernatural action genre, Bungo Stray Dogs began as a manga by Kafka Asagiri and Sango Harukawa, first published in 2012 in Young Ace magazine. The anime adaptation, produced by Studio Bones, premiered on April 7, 2016, and quickly became popular worldwide. Over the last ten years, the series has grown to include five seasons, a movie, and spin-off content. The most recent season aired in 2023, but a sixth season hasn’t been officially announced yet. Although the story hints at more to come, the studio hasn’t shared any updates about future plans.
I’ve been following the anime, and it’s celebrating its 10th anniversary! They released a cool video looking back at everything that’s happened, and launched a special website for the celebration. Just recently, in April, they announced a special exhibition at the Kanagawa Museum of Modern Literature, running from June 6th to July 12th. It sounds like they’ve got a lot more planned this year, and it’s exciting to think this is just the beginning of the anniversary celebrations.
What’s Next For Bungo Stray Dogs?
It’s been three years since Season 5 of the anime aired, and the manga has continued the story with increasing excitement and challenges. The manga’s first part ended after delivering both heartbreaking moments and action-packed fights, but took a surprising turn and its return isn’t certain. The anime finished adapting the available manga content with Season 5, meaning there’s currently no more source material for a new season.
It’s been over three years since then, and the manga consistently released new chapters each month until a break was announced in March. You can currently watch all seasons of the anime and the movie on Crunchyroll. The manga series has 28 volumes available, with 27 officially translated into English. The release date for the English translation of Volume 28 hasn’t been announced yet.
What Is Bungo Stray Dogs About?

The story centers on Atsushi Nakajima, an 18-year-old orphan suddenly expelled from his orphanage. Left with nowhere to go and facing starvation, he attempts to steal from someone but instead rescues Osamu Dazai, who was trying to end his own life. Through this encounter, Atsushi meets Doppo Kunikida and discovers that both men work for the Armed Detective Agency, an organization comprised of individuals with extraordinary powers.
Their current assignment involves hunting a dangerous weretiger with a mysterious connection to Atsushi. After discovering Atsushi’s unique ability, he joined the Agency as a new member. The story follows his search for acceptance and how he quickly becomes part of the team, despite their unusual personalities.
