Following the death of Doctor Who and Gentleman Jack director Amanda Brotchie, Russell T Davies was among those paying tribute, describing her as a “bright, sharp, and kind” person.
Brotchie directed two episodes – ‘Lux’ and ‘The Well’ – for the fifteenth series of the popular BBC sci-fi show, featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor.
Davies expressed his sadness after learning of Amanda Brotchie’s death, saying everyone who worked with her on Doctor Who loved her. He described her as a wonderful person and a joy to work with.
She directed the episodes ‘Lux’ and ‘The Well’ with incredible skill. These episodes were particularly challenging, requiring a high level of detail, creativity, and a unique artistic vision, and she executed them flawlessly.

They continued, saying they deeply admired her. As a celebrated Australian filmmaker, she’d achieved great success with projects like Gentleman Jack and Riot Women, and had worked on many popular shows. They felt fortunate to have worked with her.
He went on to share that, knowing her time was limited and accepting it, she’d written to him last week about Doctor Who. She said working with him and the team had been a major achievement, both professionally and personally. He added that they felt the same way.
“What a terrible loss. All the love to Adam Zwar and family & friends. Good night darling.”
The acclaimed Australian filmmaker died after a period of illness, according to a statement from her husband and frequent collaborator, actor Adam Zwar.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of Amanda’s passing. Many of you will remember her incredible work as a director, including shows like Doctor Who, Gentleman Jack, Lowdown (which she also created), Renegade Nell, and Riot Women. She also held a doctorate in linguistics and was a member of the influential 1980s band, Not Drowning, Waving. However, those who knew her best will remember her greatest joy came from supporting her loved ones.
He shared, “I’ll deeply miss my wonderful daughter – her loving nature, infectious laugh, adventurous spirit, and incredible courage. She had a remarkable ability to connect with all creatures, even spiders and snakes, which she’d carefully guide outside while I hid, afraid.”
Your cooking, like your filmmaking, was beautifully balanced, seemed easy and natural, and had a delicate finesse.
The Australian director not only directed two episodes of Doctor Who, but also three episodes of the popular BBC One drama, Riot Women.
Brotchie contributed to the BBC series Gentleman Jack and also directed multiple episodes of the Disney+ show Renegade Nell, a fantasy adventure set in the past.
