A fourth installment in the Darksiders series is expected to be released at some point, with a reveal in late summer 2025, though concrete details are still limited. Over the past ten years, news about the Darksiders franchise has been infrequent, as new games haven’t been released regularly. Most of the recent updates have focused on updated versions of older titles, like the newly announced Darksiders Warmastered Edition from THQ Nordic.
The updated version of Darksiders, called Darksiders Warmastered Edition, is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on May 19th. THQ Nordic says this version features better graphics, faster performance, and includes all previously released downloadable content, making it the best way to play the game on current consoles.
The PlayStation Store description reveals this updated version of the game will feature a new photo mode, display in native 4K resolution, run at a consistent 60 frames per second, and integrate with PS5 Activities, though that feature isn’t heavily emphasized anymore. The Xbox store page isn’t live yet, but the same first three improvements are expected for Xbox versions, with some technical limitations on the Xbox Series S. The remastered version of Darksiders 2 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S offered even more, including ray tracing, improved lighting and shadows, DualSense haptic feedback on PS5, and quicker loading times.
THQ hasn’t said whether owners of the original remastered version will get the upgrade for free, but they did offer a free upgrade for existing owners of the Darksiders 2 remaster, so it’s probably the same situation here. The physical copy will cost $29.99. It’s currently unknown if the digital version will be priced at $19.99, like the current remaster.
The Darksiders Warmastered Edition PS5, Xbox Series Port Marks Yet Another Re-Release
The Darksiders series has seen many re-releases across various platforms. The first Darksiders game has been remastered for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Wii U, and Switch, and is now coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2026. The sequel followed a similar path, appearing on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch, and Google Stadia before landing on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2024. Darksiders 3 received fewer re-releases, only coming to Switch and Stadia a few years after its 2018 debut. The spin-off Darksiders: Genesis initially launched on Google Stadia and later arrived on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, but hasn’t been ported to any other consoles since.
It’s common for fans to ask for sequels, but the Darksiders series especially gets a lot of this attention. The initial game was a hit, and its cliffhanger ending – showing War calling on the other Horsemen – really fueled the desire for a continuation. For nearly twenty years, players have hoped to see a game featuring all four Horsemen. Now, it’s been confirmed that the next Darksiders game will finally let players control each of them, and each Horseman will have a unique fighting style and set of weapons.
While it wasn’t a huge surprise, a new version of Darksiders has been confirmed. Hints about the game started appearing in March, and details were accidentally revealed by retailers before the official announcement.
The first Darksiders game was released in 2010 and quickly became popular. It borrowed ideas from The Legend of Zelda, particularly in how its levels were structured, but featured more intense combat similar to God of War and a darker story. Later games in the series experimented with different styles: Darksiders 2 combined elements of Diablo and Devil May Cry, while Darksiders 3 took inspiration from challenging “Soulslike” games.
