Katsura Hoshino’s popular manga series, D.Gray-man, first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2004. However, the creator’s health problems caused frequent breaks in publication. In 2018, the manga shifted to a quarterly release schedule in Jump SQ. Rise, meaning new chapters came out much less often. Although new chapters are still being released, it’s becoming harder for fans around the world to read them, as digital and translated versions are delayed. Despite these challenges, D.Gray-man continues to have a loyal following because of its imaginative world, interesting power system, beautiful artwork, and exciting plot. The story takes place in a world where, long ago, certain individuals were given special powers by the divine, allowing them to use ‘Innocence’ – powerful relics that can destroy artificial creatures created by the Millennium Earl, known as Akuma.
The Millennium Earl is trying to destroy both humanity and the Innocence—weapons that can defeat his creatures—with the ultimate goal of unleashing another world-altering disaster like one that happened long ago. The story follows Allen Walker, the main character, as he grapples with questions about who he truly is. The latest issue of Jump SQ. Rise magazine, available October 29th, 2025, will feature a cover showcasing Allen Walker and Lavi, a popular duo from the series, with Yu Kanda also highlighted. This issue includes Chapter 256 of the manga.
Who Is Lavi in D.Gray-man?

Lavi is the name this character currently goes by, but his true name remains a mystery in the manga. He was first introduced at the start of the series and quickly became a fan favorite. While he was central to the early storylines, he hasn’t been seen in the manga for quite some time, but his popularity hasn’t faded. Lavi works as an exorcist for the Black Order, but he has a unique position as the current successor to the Bookman Clan. This clan has spent centuries documenting and preserving the world’s secret, authentic history.
Lavi’s role was to document events objectively, remaining impartial and avoiding involvement. However, he found it difficult to stay on the sidelines, as he’d become close to Allen Walker and the others at the Black Order’s Marian Unit, even though his mentor cautioned him against getting attached. Adding to this, his unique Innocence, manifested as a hammer, made him a powerful fighter, capable of defeating enemies and protecting his friends.
Fans can read the manga legally on platforms like Viz and the Shonen Jump app, which currently has 245 translated chapters. However, readers using Manga Plus don’t have access to the series. An anime adaptation first aired in 2006, running for 103 episodes until 2008, when production stopped because there wasn’t enough source material. A sequel, D.Gray-man: Hallow, was released in 2016 with 13 episodes, but a second season hasn’t been announced.
