The popular sci-fi horror game, a beloved classic that heavily influenced later immersive horror games, is being removed from Steam, according to its developer, Nightdive Studio. While fans are saddened by the news, they can still play the original game for free as part of the remastered version of *System Shock 2*.
On October 10th, Nightdive Studio will no longer offer the original version of *System Shock 2*. However, anyone who buys the *System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster* will receive it for free. Since the remaster launched on June 26th, players who purchase it will have immediate access to the classic game.
The announcement has received varied reactions from fans. Some feel it unfairly pushes players towards the pricier option, while others point out that those who already own the original game will still have access to it through Steam.
The developers see this as a way to make the original *System Shock 2* accessible to more players. Instead of buying both the classic and remastered versions, players can just purchase the newest release. This lets them play the original game for free and still enjoy all the improvements in *System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster*.
Nightdive Studios hasn’t explained why they’re removing *System Shock 2* from Steam, but some believe they want to consolidate the game’s availability. Whatever the reason, the game will be taken off Steam on October 10th, though it looks like players will still be able to find it on other PC platforms like Humble Bundle and GOG.
It’s not uncommon for games to be removed from sale, and *System Shock 2* is just the latest example. Luckily, fans can still play it through the remastered version. This isn’t always the case, as seen with other games like the one from Jukai Studio. Online games often disappear when their servers are shut down, leading to discussions about developers’ responsibility to players. With gaming increasingly becoming digital, owning physical copies remains a reliable way to preserve classic games and ensure you can still play what you’ve bought.
