Bandai Namco, both the publisher and developer of Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, has shared a new eight-minute video offering a behind-the-scenes look at the game’s development.
Here is an overview of the developer diary, via PlayStation Blog:
This developer diary from the team behind Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve explains how the game represents the peak of their 30 years of experience in flight combat games.
Ace Combat 8 immediately puts you in the cockpit as a pilot operating in the world of Strangereal. You’ll take on the role of a new squad leader aboard the carrier Endurance, and a key part of the game is earning the trust of your team – something the game’s director, Kazutoki Kono, has emphasized.
You’ll play a character caught in a powerful, emotional story. It shifts between the everyday routines of life on an aircraft carrier and the intense danger of aerial combat as the nation of Central Usea fights for survival with very few resources during a brutal war.
To make players feel fully involved, the developers of Ace Combat introduced a new feature: first-person cutscenes that put you right in the action. This, combined with vastly improved graphics for planes, environments, and especially the stunning skies, creates a much more immersive and realistic experience – a true battlefield waiting to be fought over.
Kosuke Itomi, Masato Kanno, and Keiichi Yamaguchi, the developers and producers, explained that the art team used their extensive skills and years of experience to accurately recreate each beloved aircraft.
We’re thrilled to give you a closer look at Cloudly, our unique internal engine, and Lumen, the system that creates stunning, realistic clouds and weather. These technologies dramatically improve the experience for players exploring the skies.
While stunning visuals are important, the team behind Ace Combat 8 is focused on creating thrilling and intense dogfights. Producer Manabu Shimomoto shares how they’re designing the game to be fun for everyone, whether you’re new to flight games or an experienced player. Development Director Akira Yasui will also discuss the new tutorial system and how it helps make the game accessible to all.
This developer diary offers a glimpse into the dedication of our team, who bring 30 years of game development experience to this project. We’ve poured our hearts into creating immersive worlds, a compelling story, and exciting gameplay. Come join us as we get ready to launch this incredible adventure!
Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve is due out for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam in 2026.
