Adam Driver’s Sci-Fi Bomb Just Joined HBO Max (& It’s Better Than Critics Claimed)

Adam Driver has become a well-known actor thanks to acclaimed roles in films like Marriage Story and BlacKkKlansman, as well as his popular portrayal of Kylo Ren in the newer Star Wars movies. However, not every film he’s been in has been a success. A 2023 science fiction movie, where he starred alongside dinosaurs, received particularly negative reviews and didn’t perform well at the box office – and it’s now available to stream on HBO Max.

Despite being considered a box office failure – earning only $60 million worldwide on a $45 million budget – the sci-fi film 65 is now available to stream on HBO Max. Released on January 8th, it’s a surprisingly enjoyable watch, even if critics weren’t impressed. The movie follows Mills, a pilot played by Driver, who crash-lands on a strange planet that turns out to be Earth 65 million years in the past. He finds himself stranded with a young girl named Koa and must navigate a dangerous prehistoric world filled with dinosaurs to find a way home.

65 Underperformed Its Potential, but Is Still a Fun Watch

Critics and audiences didn’t respond well to the movie 65, and it performed poorly in theaters. It’s actually considered Ryan Driver’s worst-reviewed film to date, earning a mere 35% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many reviews called it boring and a waste of time.

Look, I really wanted to love 65. The idea – a futuristic soldier battling dinosaurs on prehistoric Earth – is genuinely awesome and promised a wild ride. But honestly, it just didn’t deliver. Instead of leaning into how wonderfully bonkers the premise is, the movie played it straight, and it really hurt it. The script felt weak, the story didn’t quite go anywhere, and there were a ton of plot holes. It just felt…underwhelming, especially considering how much fun it could have been. It’s a shame, because the potential was definitely there.

Despite its flaws, the movie resonated with general audiences, earning a 64% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. While it’s not a masterpiece and likely won’t be remembered as one of Adam Driver’s best films, it’s an enjoyable, undemanding creature feature. It’s a short, simple story about humans versus monsters, filled with exciting dinosaur action and cool sci-fi elements. Driver gives a strong performance and is a standout part of the film.

What’s New on HBO Max?

While the show 65 might not be for everyone, HBO Max has added a lot of new content this January. You can now stream movies like Bodies Bodies Bodies, John Wick, and Spaceballs, along with all five Twilight films, The Hitman’s Bodyguard, and the classic Fargo from 1996.
