Stephen Graham is collaborating once more with director Philip Barantini on the upcoming one-shot drama titled “Adolescence,” and we now have confirmation of its release date on Netflix.
In a four-piece narrative penned by author Jack Thorne, we follow a family’s life as it spirals out of control. This compelling tale is set to premiere on the 13th of March, 2025.
The narrative unfolds as we delve into the events that transpire following the arrest of Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old boy portrayed by Owen Cooper, for the homicide of a classmate who attends his school.
In this production, Graham takes on the role of Jamie’s character named Eddie, who is his father. On the other hand, Ashley Walters portrays the character of Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, who oversees the case at hand.
Meanwhile, Erin Doherty plays Briony Ariston, the clinical psychologist assigned to Jamie’s case.

At this week’s Netflix’s Next event, Graham shared the origin of the TV show he serves as an executive producer, explaining where the concept came from during a Q&A session.
Over the last decade or so, a significant increase in youth violence involving knives has been observed across various regions, as expressed by Graham. Particularly troubling for him were instances where young males, who are still adolescents, were found to have killed young females.
When I brought it up with Phil, it struck me quite forcefully. It made me question, ‘Why is this? What’s going on? What’s the reason behind it all?’
How does our overall society appear when such issues are highlighted on the news, considering both our perspectives as residents of council estates? Without being disparaging, it seems that when these topics come up, people’s first instinct is often to point fingers at the family, specifically at the parents – the mother and father.
It’s something we all tend to do, as it’s the most straightforward solution. Yet, I began wondering, ‘What if this assumption isn’t correct at all?’
Simultaneously, Barantini discussed the design of the show and its unique filming style, where each episode is recorded as a single, continuous take.
Initially, he made clear that our work was not intended to grab attention or stand out prominently. Instead, it was about creating an experience that was more than just conscious recognition – a feeling of immersion, as if we were guiding the audience on an engaging journey where they couldn’t look away from the screen.
In a world where we often multitask by keeping an eye on our phones, the captivating nature of this particular activity is such that it demands our full attention, leaving no room for even a single missed moment.
The concept is designed to heighten tension and anxiety, making it an engaging experience for the performers too. By fully immersing themselves in their roles, they give outstanding performances because they genuinely live these characters. There are no breaks or cuts during this hour-long performance, so they must stay in character throughout.
