I’m thrilled to vouch for the might of British storytelling! As a testament, the series “Adolescence” is creating quite a splash on Netflix, claiming the top spot as the most-watched show worldwide.
For the past six months, Adolescence has remained unrivaled as the standout show, amassing an impressive 145 million views. Premiering in March, this four-part series made a significant impact when it first aired, delving into the reasons behind the investigation into the death of a young girl.
Upon Jamie (Owen Cooper), her classmate, being taken into custody for the alleged murder, it leaves a significant and confusing impact on his family, as they grapple with accepting that their adolescent child could be capable of such a heinous act.
The show has received much acclaim for its thoughtful explorations of harmful masculinity, the increasing influence of incel ideology, and misogyny. This praise extends to the drama’s unique behind-the-scenes style and director Philip Barantini, who has generated additional attention following the reveal that the show was filmed in a single take.

Despite receiving numerous positive ratings, Adolescence is making a tangible impact on reality as well. Previously, its showrunner Jack Thorne and producer Jo Johnson have even held discussions with Sir Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street.
Apart from discussions about the potential for a second season and its format, the show catapulted young actor Owen Cooper into the limelight, leaving many in disbelief that the Netflix production was not only his debut acting role, but also his inaugural experience on a film set.
In March, shortly after its debut, it was disclosed that Adolescence had made history as the first UK streaming series to lead the weekly British ratings chart. According to the ratings agency Barb, approximately 6.5 million viewers tuned in for the premiere episode during its initial week, which explains why it has consistently broken records since then. Essentially, this just shows how captivating it was for all of us.
Another Ashley Walters-led drama, titled “Missing You,” comes second only to Adolescence in popularity. This gripping series is part of the broader Harlan Coben universe on Netflix and left viewers on the edge of their seats due to its numerous unexpected plot twists. A staggering 58 million people tuned in to catch this show, while Black Mirror’s season 7 trailed slightly behind with 31 million views, and Dept. Q rounded off the top three with 25 million.
Given the profound influence and extraordinary success of “Adolescence,” it seems highly unlikely that the creators would be content with only one season, considering its impact and the records it has broken.
According to previous reports by Deadline, it is rumored that Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B, may be negotiating a possible second season with director Barantini. If this collaboration comes to fruition, Pitt would serve as a producer for the show, similar to his role in its initial run. However, Netflix has yet to make an official announcement regarding a second season.
According to reports, there’s a possibility that the series might take a new path, deviating from Jamie’s narrative, potentially transforming into a series that tells multiple stories, similar to an anthology.
Stephen Graham, who is well-known for his role in the series, mentioned earlier in an interview with Variety that there could potentially be more stories to tell, though specifics about this new tale are currently kept confidential.
In his previous statement, writer Jack Thorne expressed that he has no plans for a second season since, as he sees it, Jamie’s storyline has reached its conclusion.
He shared with Good Morning Britain: “I feel we’ve exhausted all possibilities with Jamie’s story, so I doubt there will be a Season 2. Instead, we’re interested in experimenting with the one-off format to tell different tales. We have other stories we’d like to share using it, but a second season of Adolescence might not fit our plans.”
So, we’ll just have to watch this space.
