Adult Swim and HBO Max Worked Out a Deal to Stream Rick and Morty Faster

The eighth season of “Rick and Morty” is currently available for streaming on platforms such as HBO Max and Hulu. Interestingly, Adult Swim has been intensely working behind the scenes to ensure that the new episodes are released onto streaming services faster than ever before. Upon announcing the release date for Season 8, it was also revealed simultaneously that viewers would be able to stream the show almost immediately following its television premiere. This unexpected announcement was significant in itself, but even more so because it meant fans would not have to endure long waits after the season airs, as they often did with previous seasons.

The eighth season of “Rick and Morty” had an exceptionally quick debut on HBO Max compared to previous seasons. Traditionally, fans would have to wait six months after the season finale aired on Adult Swim before streaming it, but this time, due to collaboration between Adult Swim and HBO Max, the waiting period was reduced drastically to only 30 days – a change announced via special posts on LinkedIn. Adult Swim Worked With HBO Max to Stream Rick and Morty Season 8 Faster

According to posts on LinkedIn by Heather Laird, VP Head of Production for Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, and Patty Everett, who oversaw marketing strategies for the company, Adult Swim reduced the time between the streaming release and linear broadcast premiere of Rick and Morty Season 8 from five months to only 30 days. They credit this shortened window as a key factor in the show’s success on the platform, a claim that seems plausible given its strong performance on HBO Max’s Top TV Shows list since its debut.

As an observer, I’m noticing a significant transformation in the streaming availability of “Rick and Morty.” This move seems to align more closely with Warner Bros.’ broader release strategy, specifically with HBO Max. Intriguingly, many new Adult Swim shows are now available for streaming on HBO Max the day after their initial broadcasts (such as the upcoming Season 3 premiere of “Smiling Friends” this Fall). However, until now, “Rick and Morty,” being an established project predating HBO Max, was one of the few exceptions to this strategy, supported by Adult Swim. With this shift, the animated series will be better equipped to cater to its streaming audience demands.

What Does This Mean for Rick and Morty’s Future?

The upcoming seasons of “Rick and Morty” might potentially feature a 30-day window before streaming, though it hasn’t been confirmed yet. If this does happen, it would be great news since one of the show’s appeals lies in the lively discussions about new episodes. Traditional television viewing patterns are evolving rapidly, with an increasing number of people preferring streaming platforms these days, particularly for adult animation. As viewership habits adjust, so must the strategies of classic shows like “Rick and Morty” to stay relevant.

Although the compressed release schedule might not satisfy the impatient fans eagerly waiting for each new episode as they air weekly on Adult Swim, this change means they’ll only have a one-month wait until they can watch the final episode. As the latest seasons of Rick and Morty consistently air all episodes in quick succession with minimal breaks, it’s poised to maintain its popularity by also accelerating its streaming debuts.
