YouTube TV, the streaming service that combines channels you’d normally get with cable, recently split Cartoon Network and Adult Swim into two separate networks. Previously, both were available on a single channel. As of today, YouTube TV hasn’t explained why they made this change. This split could significantly impact the future of both Adult Swim and Cartoon Network, particularly with the planned merger between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount.
Will Cartoon Network & Adult Swim Unfuse?
Adult Swim has become increasingly prominent on Cartoon Network, expanding from a late-night block to nearly all-day programming. Popular animated shows like American Dad, Bob’s Burgers, and Family Guy, alongside original series such as Rick and Morty and Smiling Friends, have made Adult Swim frequently more popular and highly-rated than Cartoon Network itself.
It’s not certain Cartoon Network and Adult Swim will fully separate, but it’s becoming increasingly possible that Adult Swim will eventually become the more prominent brand. The recent announcement of Paramount+ and HBO Max merging suggests media companies are willing to make big changes. As traditional TV faces challenges from streaming services, the future of both Adult Swim and Cartoon Network remains to be seen.
Besides the planned merger, a major surprise from Adult Swim is the news that Smiling Friends will conclude after its third season. The show’s creators, Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel, have stated that even though the show was picked up for two more seasons, they believe it’s the right time to finish the story of Charlie, Pim, Mr. Boss, and the show’s unique characters.
