Adult Swim President Talks Upcoming Cartoon Network Crossover

Even though Adult Swim is a separate programming block, it still brings back shows that originally aired on Cartoon Network. For example, Samurai Jack returned for a final season with a more grown-up storyline. Now, some of Cartoon Network’s most talented animators are working on a new project called The Elephant, which will premiere on Adult Swim on December 19th. If you enjoy classic Cartoon Network animation, this special is definitely worth watching.

The upcoming animated episode of The Elephant is bringing together a fantastic group of creators. Animators involved include Pendleton Ward (Adventure Time), Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe), Ian Jones-Quartey (OK K.O.!), and Patrick McHale (Over The Garden Wall). Though it doesn’t seem connected to any existing Cartoon Network shows, with this team, the animation is expected to be stunning. A preview of The Elephant is available now, and Adult Swim is hinting at a behind-the-scenes documentary called Behind The Elephant.

The Elephant is Coming

When announcing the first look, Adult Swim President Michael Ouweleen explained that the collaboration will premiere on Cartoon Network on December 19th and HBO Max on December 20th. He described it as an annual tradition of giving Adult Swim fans something unexpected, and this year, that’s ‘Adult Swim’s The Elephant.’ He especially highlighted how much he enjoyed working with the talented team and supporting their long-standing friendship and creative process, adding that he’s excited for everyone to see what they’ve created.

As a fan of Cartoon Network’s animated series, I’ve been keeping track of what’s next for some of my favorites. While it looks like we won’t be seeing continuations of OK K.O! or Over the Garden Wall, there’s plenty more Adventure Time and Steven Universe on the horizon! Adventure Time is really expanding its universe. Season two of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake is already dropping new episodes on HBO Max, and that’s just the beginning. Warner Bros. Discovery is planning a whole slate of spin-offs, including Adventure Time: Side Quests and Heyo B-Mo. They’ve even hinted at a full-length Adventure Time movie! It’s a great time to be an Adventure Time fan, that’s for sure.

Rebecca Sugar, the creator of Steven Universe, is making a spin-off series called Lars of the Stars which will be available on Amazon Prime Video. Although a specific release date hasn’t been announced, fans are hoping it will premiere next year, bringing them back to the world of the Crystal Gems.
