Adult Swim Reveals First Look at Smiling Friends Series Finale

Fans of the popular Adult Swim show Smiling Friends are getting ready to say goodbye. Creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel have announced that only two episodes remain, and they want to end the series strong. Adult Swim has released a preview to prepare viewers for the final episodes, which will air on April 12th. It looks like it will be an emotional farewell for Charlie, Pim, Mr. Boss, Alan, and all the beloved characters.

As a huge fan of Smiling Friends, I loved seeing Adult Swim celebrate April Fool’s Day with that awesome extended stop-motion animation! It really reminded me that even though Charlie and Pim are all about spreading joy, the show isn’t afraid to get pretty dark sometimes. Along with news of when the final episode will air, Cartoon Network also dropped the titles of those last two installments. They’re called “Friend Bot (Version 12589218731809213528796879521)” and “Charlie’s Uncle Dies and Doesn’t Come Back,” and honestly, the promo they released hyping them up is already getting me emotional. You can check it out below – be warned, it’s a bit of a rollercoaster!

The Smiling Friends Finale

The tagline for the Friend Bot episode is strangely uninformative – it’s been removed for violating content policies. Ironically, the description for the final episode, featuring Charlie’s uncle, is much more detailed: it says Pim and Charlie meet Charlie’s mysterious and mischievous uncle, and then Allan loses it. Neither of these episodes was planned as the series finale, which might leave viewers feeling unsatisfied. Surprisingly, Smiling Friends had already been renewed for five seasons, but the creators unexpectedly decided to end the show sooner than planned.

Earlier this year, Hadel shared that the creators of Smiling Friends always intended for the show to have a natural ending, rather than running too long and losing its freshness. He and Michael Cusack made this decision early on and plan to stick to it. While he doesn’t know exactly how many seasons there will be, he’s proud of the show and excited for viewers to see what’s coming. He also expressed gratitude to the creative team, Adult Swim, and the audience. Though Smiling Friends is nearing its conclusion, Adult Swim will continue with other popular shows like Rick and Morty and Ha Ha, You Clowns.
