Adult Swim is famous for its funny animated shows like Rick and Morty and Smiling Friends, but it also delivers surprisingly intense content. A prime example is Primal, an action-packed series set in prehistoric times, following the unlikely duo of a caveman named Spear and a Tyrannosaurus Rex named Fang as they navigate a dangerous world. The third season recently began, and the first episode is now available to watch online for free.
The third season of Primal kicks off by immediately revealing how Spear was resurrected. The previous season ended with him facing a powerful, supernatural enemy – a result of a Viking’s desire for revenge. This Viking enhanced his opponent with magic, leading to a deadly fight where Spear tragically died. Now, thanks to the same mystical forces seen throughout Primal, Spear has returned. You can watch the entire premiere episode of the Adult Swim series below.
Primal’s Third Season: Genndy Tartakovsky Talks Zombie Spear
Late last year, we at egmr.ru spoke with Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator of Primal, about bringing Spear back. He explained that he envisions Primal as a platform for telling exciting, visually-driven stories with minimal dialogue and lots of action and emotion. He always planned to refresh the storyline every few seasons, and initially thought he was finished with the series. However, when he began working on a new idea, it just didn’t feel right.
Genndy admitted he worried about killing off a character. The second season had been so well-received, he questioned his decision, wondering if he’d ended the character’s arc too soon after spending twenty episodes building audience connection. While he understood it was a natural part of storytelling, he wondered if there was more story to tell.
Tartakovsky shared that the idea for bringing Spear back to life came from a previous episode of the show. He recalled that the episode ‘Plague of Madness,’ featuring zombie-like dinosaurs, demonstrated the show’s potential for a ‘pulpy’ and over-the-top style. This inspired him to quickly outline eight potential episodes, which he saw as a sign that the idea was strong and creatively promising.
Wow, did anyone catch the Primal Season 3 premiere? I’m absolutely buzzing about it and can’t wait to hear what everyone else thought! Let’s discuss it all over on the ComicBook Forum – come join the conversation now!
