Adventure Time: Fionna And Cake Showrunner Talks The Cartoon Network Crossover That Nearly Happened (Exclusive)

The second season of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake is now streaming on HBO Max. The show continues to follow Fionna and Cake, alternate versions of Finn and Jake, as they navigate a reality different from the Land of Ooo. After traveling through the multiverse in season one, they’re doing it again this season, with new episodes released weekly on Warner Bros.’ streaming service. We recently spoke with showrunner Adam Muto, who shared that a crossover with the original Adventure Time—specifically, a visit to a pirate world—almost happened.

In a conversation with the showrunner, Muto, we learned they seriously considered an entire episode where Fionna travels into the world of The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack. Adam explained they spent time brainstorming the multiverse concepts within the spin-off and how different worlds could be formed, building on the multiverse already established in Adventure Time. They explored the idea of a wish being the origin of these worlds, specifically imagining a scenario where ‘BMO wishes everyone were a baby forever,’ with the resulting universe being built from that concept. This was the starting point for that particular idea.

Muto revealed they briefly considered having Fionna actually enter the world of Flapjack and Captain K’nuckles. They even discussed creating a full episode set in that universe, but the idea didn’t progress beyond initial talks and a sketch. While Fionna’s adventures could technically take place anywhere, the creators wanted to avoid repeating past storylines. Muto hinted that elements from Flapjack might reappear in a future season three, leaving the possibility open for its return in some capacity.

Who is Flapjack?

I’ve always been a huge fan of The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, even though it often feels a little overlooked compared to shows like Adventure Time and Regular Show that were on Cartoon Network around the same time. It ran for three seasons, starting in 2008 and ending in 2010, and I still hold out hope for a revival! It doesn’t seem like K’nuckles and Flapjack are coming back anytime soon, but it’s cool to see the animators haven’t forgotten about this wonderfully weird show. If you’ve never seen it, or you want to revisit the adventures in Stormalong Harbor, all three seasons are now streaming on Hulu – definitely worth checking out!

New episodes of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake will be released weekly on HBO Max. Plus, more Adventure Time content is on the way, including the series Heyo BMO and Adventure Time: Side Quests, as well as a full-length movie. Even though Finn and Jake’s story concluded in the original show, the world of Oooo isn’t finished just yet.
