11 years have passed since The Elder Scrolls Online made its debut, having been launched in April 2014. Despite this, as stated by Rich Lambert, game director at ZeniMax Online Studios, there remains a question among many: is the MMO already available?
Indeed, you’re correct. In an interview with PCGamesN, Lambert described this as his “greatest source of frustration,” stating that Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has often been overlooked or underestimated. However, once you experience the game and its community for the first time, fans tend to stay engaged for quite some time.
The challenge isn’t about keeping players engaged, but more about reaching them initially – a question Lambert ponders as he contemplates strategies for Bethesda and ZeniMax to attract new players. Given that the MMO has been around for over a decade, it’s intriguing that there’s still anticipation among fans for its release. Lambert reminisces about numerous interviews and events over the years where people would ask, “When is this launching?” However, he notes with a smile, “It’s already been launched for quite some time!
Despite Lambert’s astonishment that The Elder Scrolls Online has remained relatively unknown for some time, he acknowledges that the developers have not been particularly vocal about promoting the game in public. As he explains, “We tend to work diligently behind the scenes, ensuring our work is done meticulously – we might not celebrate our successes as enthusiastically as we should.” However, there’s an indication that this approach may shift, given their increased efforts to engage with potential fans.
