It’s been a while since we’ve seen him, but a fan-favorite hero has returned to the DC Universe! The last few months have been chaotic, with Darkseid becoming incredibly powerful and, after wiping out the future, now threatening the present. Luckily, DC’s heroes have one last chance to defeat him: a tournament where the winner will gain power equal to that of the evil New God. This conflict is the core of the current DC Comics event, DC K.O., and there are many related stories beyond the main series.
I’ve been following this huge DC storyline, and it’s been amazing to see how they’ve expanded on it with different comics. We got a look at Batman’s intense trip to Apokolips in DC K.O.: Knightfight, and Justice League Unlimited showed what was left of the League trying to keep things together. Now, with everything coming to a head, DC just released DC K.O.: The Kids Are All Fight #1, which focuses on a bunch of younger heroes. It’s a really cool story about survival, and honestly, a familiar teen hero making a comeback is a fantastic surprise – longtime DC fans are going to be thrilled!
Static Makes His Glorious Return to the DCU After a Long Absence

In the first issue of DC K.O.: The Kids Are All Fight, by Jeremy Adams and team, the young heroes Quiz Kid, Cheshire Cat, Fairplay, and the Boom find themselves stranded at the Watchtower while the adult heroes are busy with a tournament and evacuating Earth. Fairplay discovers that Granny Goodness, one of Darkseid’s generals, has arrived on Earth, and the kids decide to go stop her. However, Jon Kent is put in charge of looking after them, and predictably, they immediately escape to pursue Granny Goodness on their own.
Jon immediately asks Batgirl for help finding the missing children. It’s a good thing too, because once the young heroes arrive on Earth, they quickly realize they’re in over their heads. They’re ambushed by Granny Goodness’s Female Furies, who now include powerful heroes like Yara Flor, Thunderheart, and Stargirl. The team is captured, but Fairplay manages to escape and is found by Batgirl and Jon. With encouragement from the experienced heroes, Fairplay, Jon, and Batgirl set out to stop Granny Goodness from using a powerful machine to enslave the world.
Throughout this situation, Granny Goodness was searching for a powerful individual with superpowers to fuel her delta wave machine. Surprisingly, that person turned out to be the hero Static, who ultimately joined forces with the other heroes to stop Granny’s evil plans. Static managed to overload the machine, freeing everyone on Earth from Granny’s mind control. Though Granny vowed to return, the heroes, including Static, stood firm, promising to be prepared when she does.
Bringing Static Back is a Perfect Decision

For many of us who grew up in the ’90s, seeing Static reappear likely brought back a lot of memories. Virgil Hawkins has always been a key character for Milestone Comics, and his animated series made him feel like a part of the larger DC Universe for a lot of fans. However, he didn’t officially join the main DC Universe until the late 2000s. He briefly had his own series during the ‘New 52’ relaunch, but it was cancelled quickly, and Static largely faded from view in DC Comics.
It’s true that DC and Milestone brought Static back during the ‘Milestone Returns’ event, but that took place on a separate Earth, not the main DC Universe. This issue marks one of the first times we’ve seen him since the New 52 era, and I’m glad for it. I know there have been some complications with the character’s ownership, but as a fan of the Static Shock TV show, especially the crossovers with other heroes, it’s great to see him interacting with a broader DC world again.
The timing is perfect because a new version of the Titans team is coming soon as part of DC Next Level, and I strongly suspect Virgil (Static) will be joining them. While it’s not confirmed, his recent appearance feels like more than just a quick appearance – why introduce him in such a big way if they don’t plan to use him? Fans are eager to see Static, and I think most of us would love to see him become a regular member of the DC Universe, especially with the Titans.
