After 17 Years, A Legendary Shonen Returns With New Anime Surprise

Beware – major spoilers ahead for the final episode of Fire Force! After a 17-year hiatus, the popular anime series Fire Force has returned in a surprising cameo during the finale of another Shonen anime. Following seven years of storytelling, Atsushi Ohkubo’s Fire Force has officially concluded. The final episode featured reality bending around characters like Shinra Kusakabe, as the power of collective imagination began to reshape the world.

Fans noticed similarities between the anime Fire Force and the creator’s previous work, but the connections weren’t fully clear until the final episodes. The series finale revealed a surprising link: Fire Force is actually a prequel to Soul Eater, and characters from Soul Eater returned to anime after 17 years! It turns out that Shinra, the main character of Fire Force, is responsible for creating the world seen in Soul Eater.

Soul Eater World Returns in Fire Force Series Finale

In the final episode of Fire Force Season 3, Shinra achieves his ultimate form by connecting with his mother and brother, Sho. With this power, he repeatedly rebuilds the Earth after the devastating Great Cataclysm. He ultimately creates a new Earth free from the threat of spontaneous human combustion, and a world where people aren’t afraid of dying. This leads to the creation of “Soul World,” a place where those with strong souls gain unique abilities – a concept similar to Soul Eater, but brought to life in a more tangible way.

This section is a treat for fans, showcasing the complete form of Death, similar to what’s seen in Soul Eater, and even including appearances by characters from that series. We get a quick glimpse of Blair as a cat, and see how events in Fire Force – like the rise of witches through Inca and Rekka’s dedication to martial arts which leads to the founding of the Star Clan – ultimately shape the world seen in that series. However, the biggest surprises come at the very end with a jump forward in time by 25 years.

Is Soul Eater Getting a New Anime?

Twenty-five years after the events of the series, Shinra and his fellow members of Special Fire Force Company 8 are living new lives on a rebuilt Earth. Shinra’s heroic actions have become a legend, and the story now connects to the world of Soul Eater. We see glimpses of younger versions of Maka, Soul, Black Star, and Death the Kid, clearly setting up a link to that series and generating excitement for what’s to come.

For the past 17 years, fans have consistently asked for a remake of the Soul Eater anime. The original anime adaptation, despite having over 50 episodes, deviated from the source material and created its own ending. We’ve never seen a truly faithful adaptation of the complete Soul Eater story, and with the franchise gaining popularity again, that absence is even more noticeable. Hopefully, this recent return signals the beginning of a more complete anime adaptation in the future.
