After 26 Years, Image Comics’ Most Important Villain Has Returned

Spawn is a hugely influential comic book character, largely responsible for the early success of Image Comics. For over three decades, fans have followed the story of Al Simmons, brought back from the dead, and his ongoing fight against the powers of both Heaven and Hell. Throughout his adventures, Spawn has battled countless terrifying enemies who want to destroy him. Now, as the conflict between Heaven and Hell intensifies, with Earth caught in the crossfire, Spawn faces a terrifying foe from the past: Malebolgia, the Lord of the Eighth Circle of Hell, who has returned after 26 years.

The recent war in Hell, which resulted in Nyx taking power, has thrown everything into chaos. This also meant Cogolistro – the original Spawn, also known as Sinn – lost what he’d been planning for centuries. Now banished to Earth and facing danger from Heaven, Hell, Spawn, and the vampire king Bludd, Sinn is desperate. He’s attempting to bring back his former master, Malebolgia, hoping to reclaim the throne of Hell. In Spawn #372, this iconic Image Comics villain has returned, and the entire Spawn Universe will be forever changed.

The Spawn Universe Wouldn’t Exist Without Malebolgia

Image Comics is known for its memorable and frightening villains, like Negan from The Walking Dead, Thragg from Invincible, and Violator from Spawn. However, none have had quite the same influence as Malebolgia. In fact, Malebolgia is arguably Image’s most important villain because he’s the one who created Spawn and all the other Hellspawn, leading to the creation of Image’s most popular and long-running series and its many spin-offs.

Malebolgia, the one in charge of Hell while Satan was away, had been fighting Heaven for millennia. To build an army strong enough to defeat Heaven, he created the Hellspawn – humans sent to Hell and equipped with powerful, living suits. Even with millions of Hellspawn under his command, Malebolgia needed a skilled leader. He struck a bargain with the selfish Jason Wynn, trading for the soul of Wynn’s mercenary, Al Simmons. Malebolgia orchestrated Al’s death, promising to reunite him with his wife, Wanda, if he agreed to become Spawn. Al accepted, but Malebolgia delayed their reunion for five years, by which time Wanda had remarried and started a family. This betrayal ultimately created Spawn, the famous and driven anti-hero.

Since his introduction in the Spawn comics, everything that has happened has been connected to the plans of Malebolgia, either directly or indirectly. For years, he tormented Spawn by sending waves of demons, including Violator, to attack him and those he cared about. He was even responsible for the death of Angela, one of Spawn’s earliest allies. In Spawn #100, Spawn finally defeated Malebolgia, beheading him. However, even after his death, Malebolgia’s influence continued to shape the Spawn Universe. Several popular new characters, like She-Spawn and Gunslinger Spawn, emerged, and many future storylines revolved around villains attempting to fill the power void created by his demise. Malebolgia briefly returned as a spirit, but failed to resurrect himself.

Simply put, Malebolgia is the mastermind behind the entire Spawn Universe, creating its compelling characters and stories with his terrifying power and reach. With his return, things are about to become much more difficult for Spawn and everyone who fights alongside him.

Malebolgia’s Return Threatens Everything Spawn has Built

After being resurrected after 26 years, Malebolgia is plotting to regain control of Hell. But he’s currently very weak and needs to kill Spawn and steal his powers to become fully strong again. Driven by revenge and a desire to restore his former glory, Malebolgia is now the greatest danger to everything in the Spawn Universe. The fact that Spawn has grown and changed since Malebolgia’s initial defeat makes his return even more impactful.

For much of his existence as Spawn, he was a scarred and solitary figure, a shadowy guardian who mostly stayed out of trouble. He only intervened when those he cared about were threatened or when seeking revenge against Malebolgia. After finally defeating his greatest enemy, he just wanted to be left alone and had no interest in the conflict between Heaven and Hell. However, over the course of hundreds of comic issues, Spawn has dramatically changed. He’s gone from avoiding involvement to becoming Earth’s main protector against both heavenly and hellish forces, even managing to defeat God and Satan themselves. Now, Spawn actively seeks out and eliminates threats to humanity, embracing his full potential and the responsibility that comes with it.

As a long-time fan, one of the coolest things about Spawn’s journey has been watching him realize he doesn’t have to carry the weight of the world on his own. For a long time, he was a total loner, always thinking he had to handle everything himself, especially after getting burned by so-called allies like Nyx and Cogolostro. But he’s really started to open up and let people in. He always had friends like Terry, Cyan, Sam, and Twitch, but the real turning point was when he created the Scorched – a whole team of heroic Hellspawn dedicated to protecting humanity. It just proves how far he’s come, actually trusting others to share the responsibility. And it’s not just about teamwork; he’s even started showing a more vulnerable side, especially with teammates like She-Spawn. It’s been awesome to watch his growth!

After a long and difficult journey, Spawn has rediscovered his humanity and broken free. Once a decaying figure haunting the shadows, he now represents the strength of the human spirit, refusing to be controlled by Heaven or Hell. But now, Malebolgia presents an even bigger danger, because Spawn has so much more to protect. If Malebolgia were to defeat Spawn and steal his power, it would unleash chaos across the universe, restoring the Lord of Hell to his full strength. Furthermore, Malebolgia won’t be pleased about the existence of multiple Hellspawns, and will likely target them as well. Spawn’s newfound freedom and the safety of his friends are at greater risk than ever, and he must fight to defend them in a conflict that will impact Earth, Heaven, and Hell.
