The upcoming movie, Toy Story 5, focuses on how Bonnie’s toys cope with her growing interest in technology like tablets and smartphones. A new character, Lilypad – a frog-shaped tablet – represents this shift, and the film will also explore other challenges for Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and the rest of the gang. To celebrate the Toy Story series, the movie will feature special commemorative Buzz Lightyear action figures, and a recent image shows they’ll have a significant role to play.
A new photo from Empire magazine’s 2026 preview shows multiple versions of Buzz Lightyear – collectively called the Multi-Buzz – preparing for battle in a forest. They’re posed as if ready to fire their lasers at anything that comes their way. You can see the image below.

Toy Story 5‘s Multi-Buzz Could Be the Film’s Biggest Comedic Highlight
Seeing multiple Buzz Lightyear figures together immediately brings to mind a hilarious scene from Toy Story 2: Buzz meeting Utility Belt Buzz in Al’s Toy Barn. That moment showed that all Buzz figures believe they are genuine space rangers when they come to life, and that hasn’t changed over the years. According to Empire magazine, having many Buzzes together will “cause chaos as they all realize they’re actually toys,” suggesting this will be even funnier than the scene in Toy Story 2. Unlike the other Buzz figures, Utility Belt Buzz never understood he was a toy and stayed with his owner, Emperor Zurg, while the rest returned to Andy.
Although Lilypad is currently being portrayed as the main villain in Toy Story 5, the Multi-Buzz character might actually be the true antagonist. The fact that the film opens with a scene featuring the Multi-Buzz – as revealed at the Annecy Animation Festival – suggests a major role in the story. It wouldn’t make sense for filmmakers to introduce such a character so early without a significant purpose. Unlike Utility Belt Buzz, who seemed like a fun, supporting character referencing the original Toy Story, the Multi-Buzz appears to be central to the plot.
Seeing a whole group of Buzz Lightyears together would be incredibly fun. Tim Allen will have a great chance to bring something fresh to the character, using his well-known comedic talent. He’s always been perfect as Buzz, giving him that confident, slightly detached personality fans love. Since Buzz’s belief that he’s a real space ranger has been a running joke throughout the Toy Story movies, everyone hopes Toy Story 5 will offer something new. It sounds like the filmmakers are building on what works while also taking the series in an exciting direction, making this a natural progression for the character and the franchise.
The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 doesn’t mention the Multi-Buzz character, so it will be interesting to see if they feature prominently in future advertising as the marketing campaign ramps up next year. If Multi-Buzz plays a significant role in the movie, it would be unusual not to include them in the promotional materials. However, Disney doesn’t need to reveal everything to generate excitement for Toy Story 5. The central idea of toys versus technology is enough to attract an audience, so the studio might keep Multi-Buzz a secret, saving the reveal for the film’s release.
