Microsoft is giving the Windows Run dialog box a makeover after three decades. A recent preview version of Windows revealed a redesigned Run box with a modern look and feel, aligning it with the current design language of Windows 11, as spotted by user @Phantomofearth on X.
The Run dialog box has been a feature of Windows for a long time – since the days of Windows 95, in fact. It hasn’t been updated in 30 years, so it’s definitely time for a modern refresh. Many experienced Windows users rely on this tool daily, often using the Win+R keyboard shortcut to quickly access it.
Microsoft has introduced a new, optional “Modern Run” dialog box that you can enable or disable in Windows Settings. If you prefer the look of the original Run box, you can easily switch back – and Microsoft recently added dark mode support to the classic version as well.
The updated Run box is noticeably bigger, with a larger space to type and a list of recently used commands displayed right above it. It also conveniently shows app icons as you search, making it easier to find what you’re looking for.

The new Run box is still under development and isn’t available in the latest preview versions of Windows. Microsoft hasn’t officially announced it yet, so it’s not working right now. However, they are actively building it, and we expect to hear more about it from the company next year.
Microsoft doesn’t often update older parts of its interface, making it interesting to see them finally improving some of these designs that have been around since the 1990s – or even before then.
The company recently announced dark mode will be expanding to more traditional parts of the interface, like File Explorer. It’s great to see Microsoft focusing on these smaller details in Windows 11 – it really makes the operating system feel polished and well-maintained.
As a researcher, I was really pleased to see the Run dialog get a visual refresh – it feels like a sign that Microsoft might finally be revisiting some of the older parts of Windows. It’s got me wondering if we’ll see updates to things like the File Properties window or even a redesigned Registry Editor. It’s exciting to think about, and I’m definitely hoping for more of these improvements!
