After 30 Years, Pixar’s Best Movie Is Coming Back to Theaters

Pixar, renowned for their animation work, plans to re-release one of their classic movies in theaters exclusively for a single night, approximately three decades after its original premiere. To mark this occasion, they shared a new poster on their Instagram account. This special event will allow younger fans of Pixar to enjoy the film as it was originally meant to be seen back in 1995.

On September 12th, Toy Story, the groundbreaking animated film that started Pixar’s animation reign, will be returning to theaters for a special one-night screening. Originally released on November 22nd in 1995, this cinematic marvel was directed by John Lasseter and written along with Pete Docter and Andrew Stanton. The movie was a moderate financial success, grossing $244.6 million globally. Over the years, it has spawned a successful franchise that continues to produce new installments, each surpassing box office expectations. For instance, Toy Story 2 earned $487 million worldwide in 1999, while Toy Story 3 grossed an impressive $1.06 billion worldwide in 2010, and the latest installment, Toy Story 4, made a staggering $1.07 billion worldwide in 2019. This re-release will occur approximately a month before the film’s actual anniversary.

On previous occasions, Toy Story has been brought back to cinemas, not just once but twice. The initial rerun took place in 2009, generating an additional $41.2 million globally. A second rerun happened in 2020, adding another $767,913 to its worldwide earnings. This latest re-release is happening as Pixar and Disney are in the thick of production for Toy Story 5, slated to premiere on June 19, 2026. In this upcoming sequel, Andrew Stanton will direct, while McKenna Harris co-directs – positions previously held by John Lasseter who was let go due to misconduct allegations involving female colleagues.

From the perspective of a cinephile:

In the magical world of Toy Story, I, as a viewer, witness Tom Hanks breathe life into Woody, while Tim Allen brings Buzz Lightyear to vibrant existence. The late Don Rickles lends his distinct humor to Mr. Potato Head, Jim Varney voices Slinky Dog, John Ratzenberger is Hamm, Wallace Shawn becomes Rex, Annie Potts embodies Bo Peep, John Morris portrays Andy, Erik von Detten takes on the role of Sid, and Laurie Metcalf plays Mrs. Davis. This cinematic gem revolves around a cowboy doll named Woody, who grapples with envy when his owner, Andy, seems to favor a new spaceman action figure, Buzz, over him. However, when Woody and the rest of Andy’s toys find themselves in unfamiliar territory, they must put aside their differences and join forces with Buzz to navigate their way back home. It’s a heartwarming tale about friendship, loyalty, and growing up.

The four movies in the Toy Story series – including the original and its three sequels – can now be streamed on Disney+. These films are also available for purchase in Blu-Ray and DVD formats. In June 2026, Toy Story 5 is scheduled to premiere in theaters. The film will feature the voices of Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, and Joan Cusack as Jessie. Additionally, Conan O’Brien has been confirmed to voice a new character named Smarty Pants, while Ernie Hudson will replace the late Carl Weathers as Combat Carl in this fifth installment.
