After 34 Years, Doomsday Finally Redeems Himself for Killing Superman

More than thirty years have passed since Doomsday killed Superman, and now the creature has finally addressed the consequences of that infamous act. Fans still remember their first battle in the early 1990s, when Doomsday rampaged across the Earth, proving nearly unstoppable. While now evolved into the powerful Time Trapper, Doomsday remains most famous for being the one who defeated and killed Superman, a moment that defined his legacy.

The Doomsday from the Time Trapper storyline first appeared in DC All In. This version comes from a far-future timeline where he repeatedly died and was reborn, eventually becoming incredibly powerful – almost a god. Surprisingly, he doesn’t hate Superman and actually teamed up with Superman’s allies to get the DC Universe ready for Darkseid’s invasion. Now that Darkseid is about to conquer everything, this future Doomsday is the last chance for hope, and he’s ready to sacrifice everything to stop him.

Doomsday Gives Up His Life to Give Superman One More Chance

The situation is critical in DC K.O.. At the end of the last installment, Darkseid appeared and defeated almost all the fighters, leaving only Superman and Lex Luthor standing. Though Superman tried to team up with Lex, Luthor predictably double-crossed him, taking Darkseid’s power for himself and seemingly killing Superman. However, in DC K.O. #5, by Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Javi FernĆ”ndez, XermĆ”nico, Wes Craig, Alejandro SĆ”nchez, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou, Superman unexpectedly revives right when Darkseid’s initial invasion began.

This isn’t a memory or a dream, but a small, separate timeline created by the Time Trapper to safeguard Superman. Now that they can speak privately, away from Darkseid’s observation, the Time Trapper shares everything he’s discovered since Superman entered the competition. He explains that through countless deaths and resurrections, he’s accumulated immense Omega and Alpha energies – the powers of destruction and creation. Instead of holding onto this power, the Time Trapper offers it all to Superman, giving him a single chance at rebirth.

Both Superman and Doomsday understand this battle will result in Doomsday’s complete destruction. However, the Time Trapper believes Superman is the only one worthy of becoming the DC Universe’s ultimate power – a being everyone would naturally follow. The Time Trapper is willing to sacrifice anything for Superman’s victory and urges him to do what’s necessary. Superman agrees, and a brilliant light engulfs him. The Time Trapper transfers the accumulated power of countless Doomsdays into Superman. With a final farewell to his long-time foe, the Time Trapper vanishes, and Superman instantly finds himself back in the Omega Tournament.

Time Trapper’s Sacrifice is the Perfect Ending for Doomsday

I was curious about how important the Time Trapper would be in the DC K.O. storyline. He’s been present for over a year and a half, and we recently discovered he was originally built by ancient Kryptonians to fight Darkseid. I initially thought he would defeat Darkseid directly, effectively removing King Omega from the DC Universe. However, the story took a different turn: Doomsday sacrificed his power and life to give Superman one last chance to defeat the DCU’s biggest enemy.

The final encounter between the Time Trapper and Superman is powerfully ironic. We’ve always seen Doomsday as a simple, destructive force focused only on killing, especially Superman. However, becoming the Time Trapper has given him a new appreciation for life. He doesn’t just accept death; he chooses it, believing his sacrifice will allow everything else to flourish. Most remarkably, he’s placing his trust in Superman – the very hero he killed – to make sure his death isn’t meaningless.

Doomsday might not be gone for good. Considering the Time Trapper is essentially a future version of him, we could easily see Doomsday return, just as dangerous as before. However, that doesn’t take away from the Time Trapper’s selfless act. Ultimately, Doomsday made a courageous decision. While it doesn’t erase all the damage he’s done, he deserves some recognition. If it weren’t for Doomsday, Superman wouldn’t have had the opportunity to fight Darkseid again.
