After 4 Box Office Flops, Sydney Sweeney’s Latest Thriller Movie Is Officially a Hit

Sydney Sweeney, a rising star in Hollywood, finally has a box office hit after a few recent films didn’t perform well. Between 2020 and 2025, she acted in an incredible 12 movies and TV shows, establishing herself in the industry. Many viewers first noticed her as Cassie Howard in the hit show Euphoria in 2019. Now 28, she’s proving her star power with a genuinely successful film after facing a string of disappointments.

After the surprising success of her film Anyone but You with Glen Powell, Sydney Sweeney experienced a downturn at the box office. While Anyone but You, released in late 2023, became a popular hit early in 2024, earning over $220 million worldwide, her subsequent movies didn’t perform well, consistently falling short of expectations.

The recent slump in superhero movie performance started in February 2024 with Sony’s Madame Web, which is considered one of the weakest Marvel-related films ever made. Even with a lot of advertising and the backing of a well-known franchise, the movie only earned $100.5 million worldwide—over $60 million less than Jared Leto’s Morbius.

Acknowledging the letdown, Sweeney minimized the importance of the financial outcomes, stating, “I really enjoyed myself, and that’s what I care about most.”

The pattern continued in March 2024 with the release of Immaculate, a horror film made on a small budget. Although it earned about $35 million worldwide on a $9 million budget, the film’s success was considered disappointing, especially when compared to other horror movies like The Nun II, which made $269.5 million globally in 2023.

By August 2025, Vertical had released the film Eden, but it didn’t make much of an impact in theaters. It earned just $2.8 million worldwide, despite costing $50 million to produce.

Later that year, I was really excited for Christy to come out – it was a passion project for actress Sweeney, where she played boxer Christy Salters. It hit theaters on November 7th, 2025, but sadly, it didn’t do well at all. Despite being shown in over 2,000 cinemas, it only made $1.3 million domestically, which was one of the worst openings for a wide release ever – a real shame, because I thought Sweeney gave it her all.

After a period of unsuccessful releases, Lionsgate had a major win with The Housemaid, a thriller based on Freida McFadden’s popular novel. The film has earned close to $95 million in the US and $145 million globally, significantly boosting star Sydney Sweeney’s reputation at the box office. Due to this success, a sequel based on McFadden’s next book, The Housemaid’s Secret, is officially in development, and Sweeney will reprise her role.

Sydney Sweeney’s Major 2026 Comeback

Following the success of her film The Housemaid, Sydney Sweeney is expected to continue gaining popularity in 2026.

She might be involved in a sequel to The Devil Wears Prada. In August 2025, she was seen with Emily Blunt on the New York City set, but her participation hasn’t been officially announced yet.

I’m so excited to hear that Sydney Sweeney is definitely coming back as Cassie Howard for Euphoria Season 3! They filmed it for a long time – February to November 2025 – and it’s finally scheduled to come out in April 2026. Apparently, there’s a big time jump, and Cassie is now engaged to Nate Jacobs and living the suburban life. Rumor has it she’s also running an OnlyFans account, which… wow. I’m really curious to see how that all plays out.

Honestly, it’s been a rough patch for them lately. This new situation comes on the heels of that whole American Eagle jeans thing back in July – you might remember, their ad slogan caused a big uproar because people thought it had some really problematic racial implications. It got a lot of attention at the time, and now it feels like they’re dealing with another similar issue.

By 2026, Sweeney is expected to have more opportunities to focus on her acting and steer clear of public controversies.
