After 48 Years, DC Comics Turns a Classic Justice League Hero into God-Level Supervillain

A surprisingly overlooked Justice League member has now become a major villain. Following the chaotic events of DC K.O., the DC Universe is in a strange state. While Darkseid’s attempt to control all of time failed, problems still remain. Most notably, Superman has disappeared without a trace. Before vanishing, however, Superman decided to distribute the powerful Alpha Energy he gained during the Omega Tournament to his fellow fighters.

The recent surge of Alpha Energy had two major consequences. It showed all the Omega Tournament fighters a glimpse of the future, revealing what they need to do before Darkseid returns. It also gave some heroes new abilities – for example, Guy Gardner now has enhanced cosmic awareness connected to the Emotional Spectrum. While we’re still discovering how everyone has been affected in the world after DC K.O., a new comic series is taking one famous hero in a completely unexpected direction.

Firestorm Goes Full Villain (And It’s More Complicated Than You Think)

The first issue of The Fury of Firestorm, created by Jeff Lemire, Rafael De Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo, and Lucas Gattoni, starts with a shocking scene. Firestorm lands in the quiet town of Bedford, Colorado, and quickly begins misusing his powers. Instead of helping, he experiments on the town and its residents, briefly feeling remorse before escalating his actions to create terrifying results. When the Department of Defense learns what’s happening, they contact Firestorm’s former teammate, Lorraine Reilly—also known as Firehawk—to try and stop him.

Lorraine believes the creature in Bedford isn’t actually Ronnie Raymond, despite appearances. When Lorraine and a group of soldiers reach Bedford, they encounter Firestorm, but he doesn’t recognize Firehawk or respond to his name. To prove he isn’t Ronnie, the being transforms one of the soldiers into water. Meanwhile, we see a vision of Ronnie as Firestorm, heroically saving people with Professor Stein’s guidance. This peaceful scene, however, is revealed to be a false reality – a mental prison holding Ronnie’s mind.

Ronnie escapes from captivity, but immediately confronts the Firestorm Matrix – which has become a conscious entity and taken over his thoughts. Unfortunately, Ronnie is trapped again, forced to repeatedly experience the illusion. Meanwhile, Firestorm defeats another soldier and battles Firehawk, who manages to survive. Firehawk realizes Professor Stein is the only one who can stop Firestorm, and discovers Stein is hiding somewhere, destroying evidence that proves the Firestorm Matrix is self-aware.

What the Firestorm Situation Means for the DC Universe

The recent development of Firestorm being something beyond a simple merging of hosts is surprising, though not entirely new. The 1980s comics by John Ostrander briefly explored a similar idea, portraying Firestorm as a being of pure fire, much like Swamp Thing is a being of plants. However, this is the first time the Firestorm Matrix – the core of the power – has been shown to be aware and thinking for itself. Usually, the Matrix just links people together to become Firestorm, but now it’s operating independently, and that’s truly frightening.

Firestorm can fundamentally alter the building blocks of matter, and as we saw in Bedford, the consequences can become frightening very quickly. Whoever controls Firestorm – whether it’s Ronnie, Jason, or someone else – understands the immense weight of that power. When a good person is in control, things are generally safe. However, the Firestorm Matrix itself isn’t a person; it lacks morals and compassion. It’s raw power with no restraints, and I honestly don’t know who could control it if it were to go rogue.

Firestorm is incredibly powerful – even Superman would struggle against him, as Firestorm could create kryptonite if he wanted to (or simply eliminate Superman altogether). The reason Firestorm hasn’t been a major threat until now is that the people controlling his powers have usually been irresponsible. However, with Ronnie Raymond lost within his own mind and Professor Stein in hiding, there’s no one left to restrain Firestorm, and he’s poised to cause widespread destruction. The DC Universe’s heroes face a huge challenge, and things are likely to get much worse before they can resolve it.
