After 7 Years, One of the Most Underrated RPGs Is Finally Getting the Sequel It Deserves

It’s frustrating when amazing role-playing games don’t get the attention they deserve. They might gain a small, dedicated fanbase, but often never become widely popular enough to justify a follow-up. This is a real loss, because these games frequently offer something new and exciting – unique stories, fascinating worlds, and ideas that haven’t been seen in mainstream games, which feels especially welcome when so many games seem to be playing it safe.

I thought the enjoyable RPG GreedFall from 2019, which played a lot like a BioWare game, would be a hidden gem – a great game that most people would forget over time. Luckily, that didn’t happen! Its sequel, GreedFall 2: The Dying World, is almost fully released. This is fantastic news not only for fans of the first game, but for RPG lovers in general, especially those who enjoy Dragon Age. It shows that smaller, more experimental studios are stepping up and delivering what many big-budget games haven’t been able to for a while.

GreedFall 2’s Early Access Launch Made It A Better RPG

As a fan of the first GreedFall, I was really excited when GreedFall 2 technically came out in 2024, though early impressions weren’t great! The developers, Spiders, had built up a dedicated fanbase with the original game back in 2019, and they decided to release a portion of the sequel as an Early Access title. Honestly, I think that’s a smart move for RPGs like this – especially with a smaller budget. It lets them build the game with the people who are most likely to buy it, rather than just working in a bubble. It’s great to see them involving the community!

While the first release received some understandable criticism, the developers at Spiders consistently worked to improve the game and its immersive world. This dedication, honed during its Early Access period, has resulted in a much-improved GreedFall 2. It now boasts exciting combat, a stunningly beautiful world, a fantastic soundtrack, and writing that’s as good as, if not better than, the original game. In short, GreedFall 2 is a truly worthy sequel, offering a larger, more refined, and more ambitious RPG experience for players who enjoy strategic, thoughtful gameplay.

I really hope the hard work Spiders put into GreedFall 2 is successful. To me, it’s more than just a sequel to a hidden gem – it’s a vital effort to keep the RPG genre diverse and exciting. Without Spiders and GreedFall 2, the kind of RPG experience we used to enjoy might disappear altogether.

GreedFall 2 Is Keeping The AA RPG Well And Truly Alive

There used to be a lot of new role-playing games, especially in the West. Before RPGs became defined by just stats and skill trees, many developers were eager to create the next big immersive experience. Games like The Elder Scrolls, Gothic, Two Worlds, and Sacred 2 offered a huge variety of RPGs, and they were all really enjoyable. However, as the cost of making these complex games increased dramatically, it became harder for smaller teams to compete, and we started seeing fewer new options.

The RPG genre became flooded with poor-quality games as studios like Ubisoft started labeling games as RPGs even when they didn’t really fit the description. This made studios like BioWare and Bethesda, who consistently delivered high-quality RPGs, incredibly popular. Sadly, after achieving great success, both BioWare and Bethesda began to produce less impressive games, leaving players with limited options. Fortunately, Spiders stepped in, trying to create similar experiences with their own, smaller-scale but ambitious projects.

GreedFall 2 is aiming to revive the style of mid-budget RPGs that studios like Piranha Bytes used to make. While some new RPGs, like Dragon Age: The Veilguard, are moving away from classic RPG elements, GreedFall 2 is intentionally building on them. This makes it a particularly appealing game for fans of Dragon Age: Origins. It’s capturing the spirit and variety of older RPGs while also incorporating the benefits of modern game development, which is something the genre really needs.

Like games such as Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and Atomfall, GreedFall 2 offers a more focused experience, appealing to players who miss when games weren’t excessively long and time-consuming. While not necessarily a short game itself, GreedFall 2 avoids the frustrating design choices common in many modern RPGs. Its release is a welcome sign for fans of classic RPGs, and a great introduction to the genre’s strengths for newcomers.
