Wonder Woman is a cornerstone of DC Comics, ranking among its most popular heroes. Despite her importance and the themes of female empowerment and sisterhood central to her story, DC often overlooks a key part of her character: her supporting cast, particularly the other Wonder Girls. While Wonder Woman has a rich network of allies, she frequently operates as a lone hero, which doesn’t fully utilize a significant aspect of her narrative potential.
DC Comics is beginning to emphasize the importance of teamwork and family in its stories, and a recent example really highlights this. In the comic DC K.O.: Wonder Woman vs. Lobo, Wonder Woman faced off against Lobo in a tournament. While Lobo tried to win the competition on his own, Wonder Woman succeeded by fighting with her allies, demonstrating how much she values the support of her “sisters” – both literal and figurative – in her adventures.
The Main Man Versus the Unstoppable Sisters

The Heart of Apokalips pitted the remaining heroes and villains against each other in pairs, starting with Wonder Woman and Lobo in a boxing ring. They were forced to fight to the death in a best-of-three match, and Lobo won the first round despite Wonder Woman’s greater skill. Lobo’s incredible strength, aggression, and ability to heal quickly gave him the advantage. For the second round, the Heart allowed each fighter to transform into a version of themselves from a different time. Lobo chose to become his younger New 52 self, much to the annoyance of the audience, while Wonder Woman surprised everyone with her own transformation.
Wonder Woman geared up in her golden armor, choosing her most powerful form, and the Heart of Apokalips amplified her strength. Recognizing Diana’s power when fighting with her fellow Amazons, the Heart also brought together Donna Troy, Cassie Sandsmark, and Yara Flor – the other Wonder Girls. The four warriors easily defeated Lobo, with even Kanga taking on the space dolphins he’d been raised by. The Wonder Family completely overwhelmed their opponent, clearly demonstrating that they are a more formidable force when united.
Women of Wonder Working Together

Since her beginning, Wonder Woman has always embodied the power of women supporting each other. The Amazons, her original creators, were depicted as a strong, advanced society where loyalty between women came first, and many Wonder Woman stories have focused on her connection to them. For instance, a major storyline in Absolute Wonder Woman centers on Diana searching for her lost sisters. Considering her history and the importance of female relationships in her world, it’s natural to think Wonder Woman would have a team of supporting heroines. Surprisingly, though, these ‘Wonder Girls’ rarely play a significant role in Diana’s main adventures.
There are a couple of reasons for this. First, for a long time, sidekicks rarely starred in their own comic books. Before Matt Fraction wrote Batman, even famous hero-sidekick teams like Batman and Robin didn’t often team up in major comics. Second, Wonder Woman’s sisters haven’t gotten the attention they deserve. While Wonder Woman sometimes works with another Amazon, she usually fights alone. The comic Wonder Woman vs. Lobo clearly showed that Diana is stronger with her sisters, and they should be featured alongside her more often.
I’ve noticed a strange trend with Wonder Woman stories. Even though it’s clear Diana is stronger with her sisters, a lot of comics seem determined to have her go it alone. We saw this in Tom King’s Wonder Woman run – for almost the entire first story arc, she kept pushing her Amazon sisters away, even though they were the ones who ultimately saved the day! It makes me think maybe the writers don’t fully understand what makes Wonder Woman great. She needs her sisters, she’s always been more effective with them by her side. DC might prefer to focus on Diana as a lone hero, but honestly, she just works better as part of a team, especially with her Amazon sisters fighting alongside her.
